About this Item
French industrialist and politician Thomas Louis Mercier (1800-1882) issued this broadside on July 30, 1833, several days after he was appointed Prefect of the Department of Vaucluse in the southeast of France. Mercier addresses this message to the sub-prefects and mayors of the Department of Vaucluse urging them to work together to maintain this time of calm and prosperity. He declares that a strong government must respect its consciences yet still repress hostile acts with vigor. He also expects his colleagues to follow the law and respect the King (Louis Philippe I) who, having dealt with challenges during the three years of his reign, has not despaired of the future of France despite facing challenging circumstances. The arms of Louis-Philippe are depicted at the top of this 21 x 16 ¾ broadside. Imprint: Avignon, Bonnet Fils, Imprimeur de la Prefecture Condition: A few light creases and fold lines, minimal scattered soil, generally very good condition with a strikingly bold typeface and decorative motifs.
