1829 - Very fine original antique engraved print titled LE PETIT RUBIS DE LA CAROLINE,Male ADULTE published for Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux-Mouche by ReneP Lesson. A beautiful engraving with original very detailed hand colouring. Size approx 14cm x 22.5cm including margins. Condition generally very fine.Renandeacute; Primevandegrave;re Lesson(20 March 1794 andndash; 28 April 1849) was a French surgeon, naturalist, ornithologist and herpetologist.He was born at Rochefort, and entered the Naval Medical School in Rochefort at the age of sixteen. He served in the French Navyduring the Napoleonic Wars; in 1811 he was third surgeon on the frigateSaale, and in 1813 was second surgeon on theRegulus. In 1816 Lesson changed his classification to pharmacist. He served on Duperreysround-the-world voyage of La Coquille(1822andndash;25), of which he collected natural historyspecimens with his fellow surgeon Prosper Garnotand officer Dumont dUrville.During his visits to the Moluccasand New Guinea, Lesson became the first naturalist to see birds of paradisein the wild. On returning to Paris, he spent seven years preparing the section on vertebrates for the official account of the expedition: Voyage autour du monde entrepris par ordre du Gouvernement sur la corvette La Coquille (published from 1826 to 1839).During this time period, he also produced Manuel dOrnithologie (1828), Traitandeacute; dOrnithologie (1831), Centurie Zoologique (1830andndash;32) and Illustrations de Zoologie (1832andndash;35).Lesson also published several monographs on hummingbirdsand one book on birds of paradise.Antique Paper Company are a long established family business selling original antique prints, maps engravings as well as many other paper antiques such as original vintage Decorative Posters, Ephemera, Stamps Postal History, Manuscripts, Antiquarian Books much more.
