This Bible, printed by Johann Zainer, was the only Bible to be printed in Ulm during the 15th century and was the first to include chapter summaries (in larger print). When the first of these Bibles were sold, they were embellished before leaving shop with border woodcuts. Zainer, who was apparently in need of funds, sold his woodcuts to raise money, so his Bibles sold later were bound without the embellishments. This leaf (11 ½ x 16") has no border embellishments. Spaces were left at the beginning of each chapter to apply large inked initials in either red or blue. Other printed capitals are rubricated with small red strokes. It contains the text of the apocryphal book, Ecclesiasticus, Chapters 30 through 33. . The 15 books of the Apocrypha were considered to be part of the Bible for almost 2,000 years until they were removed from the King James Version in 1885.
