In 1921 MI5 commissioned a comprehensive report on its own operations during the First World War. Never intended for circulation outside of the government, this document has now been declassified and is published here in an edited version, introduced by Nigel West. The main narrative examines attempts to manage and detect double agents and the apprehension and execution of enemy spies, but the report also contains a unique account of the Kaiser's pre-war and wartime intelligence offensive.

Review:
Once again our foremost chronicler of MI5, Nigel West, has pulled off another literary coup in a career full of them. Just in time for the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War, West proves beyond doubt both that German Intelligence mounted a massive intelligence operation in Britain, and that MI5 responded with impressive efficiency and on occasion ruthlessness ... Fascinating and invaluable. --Andrew Roberts

A fascinating and authoritative account of the early days of modern espionage - there is material here for a dozen thrillers. --Robert Harris

This edited account of MI5's bureaucratic structure and investigatory strategies is fascinating. --The Times

[T]his précis is just the ticket, and has the feel of a fictional adventure. --The Independent

Nigel West makes full use of declassified documents and letters to reveal the full scope of this second front, and transforms the complex ups and downs of espionage into a gripping tale of subterfuge that stretches across the globe. --Good Book Guide

A fascinating read. --Britain at War
About the Author:
NIGEL WEST is a military historian specialising in security and intelligence topics. He was voted the 'experts' expert by a panel of other spy writers in The Observer in November 1989, and the Sunday Times has commented: His information is so precise that many people believe he is the unofficial historian of the secret services. West's sources are undoubtedly excellent. His books are peppered with deliberate clues to potential front-page stories. He is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence and Global War Studies and, for the past three years, he has chaired the panel of judges for the annual St Ermin's Intelligence Book of the Year award. He is also the recipient of the US Association of Former Intelligence Officers first Lifetime Literature Achievement Award.
