A detailed study of over 40 sphingid species resident in Europe (Ireland to the Urals), North Africa and the Middle East with particular emphasis on ecological factors governing population and distribution. The introduction covers classification; morphology; life cycle and biology; variation; species; sub-species and hybrids; behaviour; population; ecology; habitat; distribution; and details of zoogeography. A systematic section also gives detailed descriptions of the species' life histories, flight periods, habitat, food plants and details of breeding techniques. The colour plates depict 109 figures of adults photographed from set specimens, larvae of 40 species and five subspecies or forms on their foodplants, and 13 types of habitats.
