It focusses especially on the role of biblical narratives as subtexts of modern and contemporary literature. The contributors consider a range of texts from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries by Fielding, Brontë, Lawrence, Winterson, and Coupland, among others, to examine in different yet complementary ways the multiplicity of approaches that novelists have adopted to address religious concerns.
