Book Description First Dublin edition. 4.75 x 6.75 inches. First London edition was printed in the same year 1771, but this Dublin edition is much rarer. By John Millar - Professor of Laws in the University of Glasgow (1735-1801). xi, 240 pp. Contents: Of the Rank and Condition of Women in Different Ages; Of the Jurisdiction and Authority of a Father Over his Children; Of the Authority of a Chief Over the Members of a Tribe or Village; Of the Rise of a Sovereign Over an Extensive Society; and the Advancement of a People in Civilization and Refinement; Of the Condition of Servants in Different Parts of the World. This is Millar's most important work, and is one of the finest and earliest examples of an empirical approach to sociology.
