Trade paperback. One of the most important Japanese novels of the 20th century, this is reminiscent of Kafka's works. An amateur entomologist wanders into a remote seaside village in pursuit of a rare beetle, and is offered lodging for the night at the bottom of a vast sand pit. But when he attempts to leave the next morning, he discovers that he is a prisoner and his only companion is a young widow, a pariah in the poor community, who the villagers have condemned to a life of shoveling back the ever-encroaching dunes that threaten to bury the town. Translated from the Japanese by E. Dale Saunders. Illustrated with drawings by Machi Abe. 241 pp. Near fine.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. THE BOOK IS MADE TO ORDER AND IT TAKES 2 TO 4 WEEKS FOR IT TO BE READY FOR SHIPPING *****SIZE- 8 x 5.5 inches (21 x 13.5 cm). *****EDITION - 2 of 100, initialed and numbered. *****If you are interested in a different title, send me a message and I will give you a quote.*****The original book's ISBN 978-0141188522*****Books, as much as experiences, change my life, and I decided to make a limited collection of all the books I read and loved. And maybe you also will find in my collection a book that you enjoyed, and it even might have influenced your life. *****The book is a soft cover which I recycle and transform into a limited edition, personalized hardback with leather cover, designed and made by me. First, I prepare the book by embedding cotton cords into the spine. Adding 2 mm wood boards to the front and back. And reinforcing everything with cloth. To make the cover I use grade A, naturally tanned hide, I buy from a tannery in north Spain. It is the same leather Louis Vuitton uses to make his bags, so it is top quality. I do all the processing of the leather myself. First, I design the cover, and what I did here I used the stencil from the The Woman In The Dunes movie poster, and placed over sand dunes background. And also added the title in Japanese as well as English. Next, I mix leather inks and screen them on the surface of the leather. The inks are partly absorbed by the skin to create a permanent bond. Finally, I coat the leather with protective solution. The leather gives the image a vintage look and beautiful texture, and it will age nicely with time. Inside the front cover. I can print a personal message or a quote from the book. The book is beautiful. Visually it has a very nice texture, it smells great, and the more you handle it the more beautiful it will become. And it makes a great gift for yourself, or somebody who appreciates books. So if you want one, don t snooze, or you might lose. I will make a total of 100 editions. Each one will be initialed by me and numbered. The numbers will go in chronological order from 2 up, since number 1 stays with me. *****RETURNS: This is a custom-made item, so returns or exchanges are not accepted. But you can contact me if there is any problem with your order. *****COLORS: Since I make each item to order, the color might vary from the pictures. It depends on how the inks mix and how they react with leather. *****SHIPPING: I make each item to order, and it takes a few weeks, since I need to find the book first. I go to the post office once a week. Estimated delivery time is about two weeks, but it depends on the postal service and customs. And occasionally there are delays, and it might take a month or so to arrive.
