Im Herbst 1939 kommen die Großeltern zu Besuch, die kränkliche Großmutter und der kräftige, stolze Großvater. Als der plötzlich ausgebrochene Krieg die Kleinstadt T. erreicht, in der Macieks Familie lebt, flieht der Vater nach Rußland und läßt Maciek, die Großeltern und Tante Tanja zurück. Tanja bekommt Arbeit bei den deutschen Besatzern, sie beginnt ein Verhältnis mit Reinhard, einem deutschen Soldaten, wodurch sie das Schlimmste für ihre Familie verhindern kann. Als sie sich verstecken müssen, beschafft Reinhard ihnen eine Wohnung. Der Großvater flieht nach Warschau, Tanja und Maciek in die nächstgrößere Stadt. Mit falschen Papieren, immer in der Angst, entdeckt zu werden, immer wieder zu lebensrettenden Lügen greifend, schlagen sich Maciek und Tanja nach Warschau durch, in der Hoffnung, dort den Großvater zu finden, der ihnen aber auch nicht helfen kann, weil er sich selbst verstecken muß. Als katholische Polen getarnt, erleben sie den Aufstand im Warschauer Ghetto und dessen Niederschlagung. Durch eine List gelingt es Tanja, sich selbst und Maciek in letzter Sekunde vor dem Transport nach Auschwitz zu retten. Sie finden Unterschlupf in einem abgelegenen Dorf, müssen aber auch von dort wieder fliehen. Schließlich ist der Krieg zu Ende, und die Russen kommen. Auch der Vater kehrt zurück. Maciek und Tanja behalten aber weiterhin ihre polnischen Namen, sie wagen es nicht, sich zu ihrer jüdischen Identität zu bekennen. - Louis Begley (* als Ludwig Beglejter am 6.
