Le titre du recueil fait référence aux chars qui, des grands boulevards jusqu'aux collines de Belleville et de Ménilmontant, racolaient noceurs et étudiants, le jour du Mardi-Gras, pour les conduire vers ces courtilles où l'on passait une nuit blanche dans des guinguettes, à boire et à danser, déguisés et masqués. Le lendemain matin, jour des Cendres, tout ce joyeux monde passablement fatigué, mais encore capable de provoquer un charivari, se donnait bruyamment en spectacle. Il est vraisemblable que les jeunes Goncourt ont dû assister à ces ébats que Gavarni a lui-même représentés dans ses "Descentes de la Courtille".La préface de trois lignes, datée du 25 octobre 1855, reprend le terme du titre pour qualifier cette galerie de personnages fantasques qui ne sont pas tous sortis de l'imagination des auteurs : "Mesdames et Messieurs, voici vingt-deux comédiens de la troupe du bon Dieu : des hommes. Ils ont ôté leurs masques, et vont vous conter leur histoire."Bon exemplaire, relié à l'époque sans les couvertures, avec l'ex-libris manuscrit d'Alain Barbier Sainte Marie et une note précisant qu'il provient de la bibliothèque d'Eugène Labille de Breuze (1845-1930), petit cousin des frères qui est abondamment cité dans leur Journal sous le surnom de "Marin".
