FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE 1876, 4to, approximately 270 x 215 mm, 10½ x 8½ inches, 2 chromolithograph plates by John Day of watercolours after James Poole, 6 thick cards displaying 2 completed flies and 23 flies with dressing materials displayed in 22 sunken mounts, title page printed red and black, pages: xiii, [4], 1-91, text and mounts within 2 red borders, attractively bound in half green crushed morocco, matching cloth covers, gilt lettering, gilt rules and gilt flies between raised bands to spine, gilt rules to covers, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight rubbing to spine, pale age-browning to title page, pale foxing to 15 pages and to most of the boards holding the flies, plus small brown spot to 1 lower margin, small neat repair to 1 inner margin of text at rear, almost invisible, pale offset to text from the sunken cut outs holding the flies, vertical tear to upper wing of the last fly, but no loss.     2nd issue Edn,. xiii 91 pages + errata, AEG, 4to, coloured lithograph frontis of Lugwy, North Wales and before page 1 a coloured lithograph of Offerton Stepping Stones, near Hathersage, Derbyshire, both on thick card. There are 25 actual specimens of flies and fly making material in 22 oval mounts, some foxing to the text and occasionally to the mounts, the flies and fly making material are all present with the original seals and in good condition. To the front-end paper, a large presentation inscription on card laid down on the end paper to "W.Rhys Williams M.D" noting his friendship of 15 years to "Georg H. Haydon" 17th June 1878, written in black and red ink. Within a well-drawn ink border of rushes above a trout and fishing basket. Angling bookplate to paste down of J. Hammick . Original green cloth binding with title and fish vignette in gilt to the upper cover within a background of black blind stamped rushes and mayflies, within surrounded by a black lines border with lily pads and fish decorations, gilt title to spine with 2 gilt mayflies. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and outer corners no splits or damage often found with this title. A bright copy in the original state of a beautifully produced book. "Printed from an old ms. never before published, the original spelling and language being retained, with editorial notes and patterns of flies, and samples of the materials for making each fly. By W.H. Aldam", this is the first book to use actual fly-tying materials and flies; it is said approx. 220 copies were produced. The first issue was dated 1875 on the title page only a few copies were produced, this copy being the 2nd issue. W/S p3.

Externally just slightly rubbed at edges but very good and bright cloth. Bookplate of H.E. The Governor of Bengal to front paste-down. With actual specimens of flies and with dressing materials displayed in 22 sunken mounts on six thick card leaves. This copy unfortunately lacking the fly in mount 12 though all other flies and materials are present and in good condition. Title page printed in red and black, title and text printed within double red rules. The cloth is titled A Quaint Treatise on Flies and Fly Making by an Old Fisherman, edited by W.H. Aldam. The manuscript upon which this book is based appeared at auction in 1999 (and sold for £8,200) revealing the author's name to be Robert Whitehead. "Of all Books in whose pages there are inlaid actual Artificial Flies, the best of all for beauty and interest is 'Aldam's Quaint Treatise.' The Flies in it are tied with an excellence that I have never seen beaten. (J.W. Hills). "Most of the flies were tied by Mary Ogden-Smith, a daughter of James Ogden of Cheltenham, and some by David Foster of Ashbourne. The Mayflies which are tied on vertically-eyed Bartlett Limerick hooks are said to have been dressed by James Ogden himself and are likely to be the earliest example of the floating fly extant." (John Simpson in Thomas Thorp Catalogue of Angling Books, A12, 1973). The book, and its author, has been the subject of numerous articles including one by Ian Niall in the December 1964 issue of Creel and one by Kenneth Robson in the April 1994 issue of Salmon, Trout & Sea-Trout. .

Green embossed cloth, with gilt titles and decorations on the spine and front cover, rubbed on the edges, with a small bite taken out of the edge of the rear cover (probably the work of a mouse), early neat ink owner signature on the half-title page. xvi pp + 92 pp + two color plates + six mats. These mats have recessed ovals that contain 25 flies, plus samples of the fur, feathers and other materials used to tie them."There exist to-day many books with excellent representations of artificial flies.but the best of all, for beauty and interest, is Aldam's Quaint Treatise" (Hills). The two mayflies in the book ".were tied by James Ogden.These are the oldest surviving examples of which the author knows" (Betts). All of the flies and materials are present and in fine condition. A previous owner has identified each fly, and neatly written its name on the mat, with the exception of the last two flies. Very good.

The very rare 1875 imprint; almost all copies bear an 1876 imprint. With numerous specimens of flies and fly-making materials in 22 sunken mounts. Presentation copy belonging to the artist. Inscribed on the title page: "James Poole Esq. / with the Editors kind regards & most sincere thanks." There is an additional gift inscription adjacent to this from Poole to J. Bedford, dated 1888. The present is one of the minority of copies with the title page dated 1875 rather than 1876 (as the spine reads).
