Leather. Condition: Fair. None (illustrator). A collection of political and legal works from the seventeenth century. Bound in full leather. Contains four volumes bound as one. Very scarce. Collates complete. Henry Scobell (c1610 - 1661) was an English Parliamentary official, and editor of official publications. He was clerk to the Long Parliament, and wrote on parliamentary procedure and precedents. Sir John Doddridge (1555 - 1628) was a judge. As a lawyer Dodderidge was immensely well respected. He was known as the Sleeping Judge, not because of any shortcoming on his part, but because of his habit of concentrating on legal argument with eyes firmly closed. Dodderidge got to the heart of matters very quickly, and his arguments as advocate, as judge, and as parliamentarian had a compelling lucidity. His writings show the same quality. In a full calf binding. There is significant wear to the extremities including heavy rubbing with some loss to the leather and cracking to the spine. The front board is detached but present. The binding is generally tight and firm although it is coming loose at the bottom of the volume. There is an ink stamp mark to the front pastedown and a signature and annotation to the first title page. A few of the pages have underlinings. The final 33 pages have been close trimmed at the foredge with loss to the odd letter at the end of a line of text. There is a small tear with loss to the first title page and to the corners of a couple of pages, but with no loss to the text. Overall the volume is in fair condition externally but good internally. Extremely scarce and important work. Fair. book.

First Strype Edition, best and most desirable edition of Stow's magisterial studyâ "the "starting point of all inquiry into the subject of Elizabethan London." Complete in two folio volumes; each of the six 'books,' introduced by a drop-head title, with its own pagination: [4], xii, xlii, [2], 308, 208, 285, [1]; [2], 120, 459, [1], 93, [3], 143, [1], 26, [2]pp, with 70 plates, plans and maps (31 double-page or folding), including those of London, Westminster and Southwark. Provenance: On the verso of the title pages, the engraved armorial bookplate of Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (bapt. 14 October 1694 - 17 February 1761), English Politician and first elected president of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, whose members included Benjamin Franklin, Karl Marx, Adam Smith, William Hogarth and Charles Dickens. Maslen & Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers, 584. Lowndes V, 2526. Gibson's Library, p. 258. ESTC Citation No. T48975. This edition of Stow's Survey was the first to contain a series of ward maps: "Many of these maps are excellent. Their clarity and accuracy fulfill the requirements of the student of London history" (Hyde). Fifth and Best Edition.Titlepage in red and black. Each of the 6 'books' has its own pagination, and is introduced by a drop-head title. Adams London Illustrated 25; Lowndes III, 2526; Upcott II, pp, 605-617; Darlington and Howgego 16, 8 (London maps). "Fifth and grandest edition. John Strype was already collecting materials for the text by 1703, and an ambitious reprint 'with very great Additions throughout, and illustrated with about 100 large Copper Cutts . requiring much Time and Great expence' was advertised as early as 1708. The advertisement was on the title verso of Hatton's New View of London, a smaller and cheaper book whose popularity actually caused the postponement of Strype's more monumental work. His two folio volumes cost six guineas and the print run was probably at least 500 copies. He included what he believed to be Stow's entire original text, which had become conflated with the 1618 and 1633 editions of Anthony Munday, clearly identifying his own additions in the margins. John Kip, who had been responsible for the views of London buildings in volume I of Mortier's Nouveau theatre de la Grande Bertagne (1707), is credited with about half the 28 engraved views of 'eminent places'. In addition there are two folding general maps of London, one showing the city as it was in Queen Elizabeth's time, 17 ward maps (bks. II-III) and 20 parish maps (bks. IV and VI). The only map to be signed is the Parish of St. Mary Rotherhithe revised by John Pullen and engraved by John Harris. (2)" Christies. John Stow's Survey of London, first published in 1598, brims with amusing descriptions and anecdotes as well as highly detailed accounts of the buildings, social conditions and customs of the time, based on a wide range of classical and medieval historical literature, public and civic records, and Stow's own intimate knowledge of the city where he spent his life. "The reader of A Survey travels with Stow through each of the city's wards and the adjoining city of Westminster, learns about the wall, bridges, gates, and parish churches . . . [Stow] also records the negative aspects of urban growth, in the shape of unsightly sprawl, filth, the destruction of ancient monuments, and above all poverty. His book approaches the thoroughness of an encyclopaedia . . . It is noteworthy that while Camden's Britannia was written in Latin for the educated élite, Stow's Survey was composed in the language of his fellow countrymen." This edition, of 1720, greatly expanded with interpolated amendments by John Strype, is considered the best and most desirable. "Throughout his life at Low Leyton, Strype crossed the River Lea into London each week to meet and converse with his antiquarian friends and to call on his contacts in the book trade. . . . The Survey had been repeatedly revised and enlarged in order to keep up with the changing aspect of the post-fire city, now much expanded and altered in its religion and other ways. . . . Although Strype had arranged most of the work by 1707, and the engravings had been prepared, it was set aside after the publication of Edward Hatton's New View of London in 1708, which seemed to cover much the same ground and was considerably smaller and cheaper. . . . Finally, once the defects of Hatton's book were acknowledged another agreement in November 1716 led to the Survey's publication at the end of 1720. . . . The print run was probably more than 500 copies . . . To quote Merritt, â By this stage the Survey has a multiple personality, switching with little warning from nostalgic Elizabethan antiquary [Stow] . . . to diligent post-Restoration recorder of events [Strype] and back again' (Merritt, 87)." Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. (4), 58, (2); 108, (2); 206 pages. 193 x 158 mm. John Lightfoot (29 March 1602 - 6 December 1675) was an English churchman, rabbinical scholar, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was educated at Morton Green near Congleton, Cheshire, and at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he was regarded as the best orator among the undergraduates. After taking his degree he became assistant master at Repton School in Derbyshire; after taking orders, he was appointed curate of "Norton-under-Hales" (i.e. Norton in Hales) in Shropshire. There he attracted the notice of Sir Rowland Cotton, an amateur Hebraist, who made him his domestic chaplain at Bellaport. Shortly after the removal of Sir Rowland to London, Lightfoot, abandoning an intention to go abroad, accepted a charge at Stone, Staffordshire, where he continued for about two years. From Stone he removed to Hornsey, near London, for the sake of reading in the library of Sion College. In September 1630 he was presented by Cotton to the rectory of Ashley, Staffordshire, where he remained until June 1642. He then went to London, probably to supervise the publication of his work, A Few and New Observations upon the Book of Genesis: the most of them certain; the rest, probable; all, harmless, strange and rarely heard of before. Soon after his arrival in London he became minister of St Bartholomew's Church, near the Exchange. Lightfoot was one of the original members of the Westminster Assembly; his "Journal of the Proceedings of the Assembly of Divines from January 1, 1643 to December 31, 1644" is a valuable historical source for the brief period to which it relates. He was assiduous in his attendance, and, though frequently standing alone, especially in the Erastian controversy, he exercised considerable influence on the outcome of the discussions of the Assembly. He was made Master of Catharine Hall (renamed St Catharine's College) by the parliamentary visitors of Cambridge in 1643, and also, on the recommendation of the Assembly, was promoted to the rectory of Much Munden, Hertfordshire; he kept both appointments until his death. In 1654 Lightfoot had been chosen vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge, but continued to live at Munden, in the rectory of which, as well as in the mastership of Catharine Hall, he was confirmed at the Restoration. While travelling from Cambridge to Ely, where he had been collated in 1668 by Sir Orlando Bridgeman to a prebendal stall, he caught a severe cold, and died at Ely. Lightfoot bequeathed his library of Old Testament books and documents to Harvard University. It was destroyed in the great fire of 1764. John Lightfoot. Opera omnia. Rotterdam: Reinier Leers, 1686. His first published work, entitled Erubhin, or Miscellanies, Christian and Judaical, written in his spare time and dedicated to Cotton, appeared in London in 1629. In 1643 Lightfoot published A Handful of Gleanings out of the Book of Exodus. Also in 1643 he was appointed to preach the sermon before the House of Commons on occasion of the public fast of 29 March. It was published under the title of Elias Redivivus, the text being Luke 1. 17; in it a parallel is drawn between the John the Baptist's ministry and the work of reformation which in the preacher's judgment was incumbent on the parliament of his own day. In 1644 the first instalment of an unfinished work was published in London. The full title was The Harmony of the Four Evangelists among themselves, and with the Old Testament, with an explanation of the chiefest difficulties both in Language and Sense: Part I. From the beginning of the Gospels to the Baptism of our Saviour. The second part, From the Baptism of our Saviour to the first Passover after, followed in 1647, and the third, From the first Passover after our Saviour's Baptism to the second, in 1650. On 26 Aug. 1645 he again preached before the House of Commons. . .
