Illustrated with sixteen plates and four maps. xv + 410pp. Conditon is G+ with a Fair dj. Jacket is very worn and soiled, with a number of tears, particularly at the extremities, and missing chips. Boards are mottled and rubbed. Owner name penned on ffep. Otherwise unmarked though there is a large age spot on the title page, and a couple spots with light foxing. Book is square and tightly bound, fold out maps are very nice. The author "describes the desert and its inhabitants, the channels of ancient and medieval trade, the early travellers and their hardships, the life of the great merchant and pilgrim caravans, eleven centuries of postal service, and finally the era of mechanical transport." Dr. Grant also has provided six appendices dealing with the glossary of Arabic names, places, tables of moneys and exchange, bibliography and notes. Bound in light brown cloth spine lettered and decorated in gilt, soiling, or staining to covers. A very good copy.

This work covers ancient and medieval trade, merchant, private and hajj caravans, postal service, and mechanical transport. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just a little bumping to the upper extremities and to the tail of the spine, and a faint mark to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Small stains to the fore edge. All folding maps are in excellent condition. Very Good. book.

Extensive reading of the writings of the desert travellers together with four years work in the field went into writing this book. During her field work Dr Grant discussed problems personally with eminent explorers and surveyors of the desert, with Ministers of the Egyptian government, and with such authorities as Hajii Selim Sawwaf of Damascus, T.E. Lawrence and the initiator of the motor transport system.
