A few pen marks and a tape pull at bottom edge of front flyleaf. The bottom edge of pages 64-75 show evidence of a cigarette burn. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. David Holzman (jacket art) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Rendell has won multiple awards for her work. This is her sixth novel, which is a pretty scarce title. This copy came to us as an ex-library book, and because of its importance, we sent it through our book conservation program to address the damage. The paste-downs and end papers have been archivally and appropriately replaced, a library stamp was removed from the title page, and the page block edges have been cleaned. There is a small amount of reader evidence remaining to the interior and some minor wear to the bottom edges of the unbumped and unfaded boards. The dust jacket is unclipped, bright, glossy and sharp-edged with no fading or tanning. No tape stains to any part of the book or jacket. There is a small puncture on the spine of the jacket and a trace of rubbing along the spine. Altogether, a very presentable copy. Customers tell us we overstate flaws, but we prefer to be careful.

First Edition
First edition. First U.S. edition. Fine in lightly soiled dust jacket, lightly sunned on spine and with minor wear to spine ends. "Louise North doesn't care what the neighbors think. She lets her lover leave his car just outside her house in broad daylight, telling everyone a cockamamie story about him being a central heating salesman. Still, it's a shock when she's found shot dead, covered by the equally dead body of the "salesman." Now Susan Townsend -- the Norths' next-door neighbor, who discovers the bodies -- must help Louise's husband, Bob, get back on his feet. But is she helping a neighbor . . . or a murderer?" Crime Club murder mystery.

Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. This is the true first edition (UK 1968) of Rendell's very scarce title concerning a double murder that is at first taken for a lovers' suicide. Despite some minor faults, this is a very lovely copy. The book's condition can be broken down as: COVERS/BOARDS are Fine ( no bumps, rubbing, fading, soil). The spine heel and crown are crisp with no wear at all - like it was just unpacked. The INTERIOR is very clean and exceptionally crisp with two or three creased corners within. The title page has an embossed library seal, which is tidy and unobtrusive. A faint number is stamped on the copyright page. The back page has a stamped seal that is bleached and nearly invisible. Inside front cover has an indeterminate yellowing mark, possibly from glue. The page block edges are clean and bright. The DUST JACKET was shallowly trimmed on all sides. The price is intact, and there is minor edgewear/fraying to extremities. No chips. One shallow edge tear on bottom edge has been archivally mended. Otherwise, the dust jacket is glossy and bright. AUTHOR'S AUTOGRAPH is to the title page, made with black felt-tip pen. Please email for scans. This copy is not perfect, but it is definitely solid and presentable. The author's many awards include three Edgars and four Gold Daggers. Signed by Author(s).
