"Lewis Grassic Gibbon was the pen name under which James Leslie Mitchell wrote his Scottish novels. He was born at Segget in the parish of Auchterless, Aberdeenshire, on 13 February 1901. He spent his boyhood mainly in Kincardineshire - the scene of A Scots Quair. . . . His first book Hanno: Or The Future of Exploration was published in 1928. Numerous works of non-fiction and fiction quickly followed until in 1932 he wrote Sunset Song, the first volume of A Scots Quair. . . . he was born of peasant folk and died in 1935.".
