Melbourne: Georgian House, 1962. First edition. Quarto, cloth in dustjacket, 38 plates, a couple of spots of foxing. An important early monograph in fine condition in the Australian Art Monographs series. This copy signed and inscribed 'To George Bell, he who guided me out of Darkness, his ever grateful Disciple, Sali February 1963'. Swiss-born painter Sali Herman (1898?1993) arrived in Melbourne in 1937 to escape rising anti-Semitism in Europe. Her studied at George Bell's art school in Melbourne in 1937-38, Bell's friendship and guidance evidently a lasting influence on the emigree artist.
