Francis Warrington Dawson (born Joseph Austin Reek in London in 1840) emigrated to the United States in 1861 on the CSA steamer Nashville in order to join the Confederate service. He soon decided agiant naval service and enlisted in the artillery and was promoted to the rank of captain in April, 1864. After the war he remained in the South and became a journalist and newspaper publisher.
