Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Peking [=Bejing], Foreign Languages Press, 1966. Small 8vo. [8] + 312 pp. + 1 portrait plate. Publisher's red vinyl. A near mint, unread copy, very small black speck on rear board, else flawless. First English edition. The importance of Chairman Mao's Little red Book can hardly be exaggerated. Its publication inspired and defined both the Cultural Revolution in China and the Maoist movement throughout the rest of the world during the 1960s and 1970s. The first edition in Chinese was published in 1964 at the initiative of Lin Bao (1907-1971), then vice-premier of the People's Republic of China, vice-chairman of the Chinese Communist Party and minister of national defense. His calligraphic recommendation is still preserved in this book, unlike some copies where it was torn out after an official campaign to denounce him as a traitor after his death. Two years after its first publication in Chinese, this English-language edition was published by the Communist Party as part of its efforts to disseminate Mao's ideology and teachings to an international audience, thereby presenting China as a progressive and revolutionary Marxist-Leninist force in global politics. The impact was huge, not least among left-wing youth in Western Europe and the United States, where Mao became an iconic figure in the political struggle. His portrait was seen on the walls of Paris in May 1968, in anti-war demonstrations and student dorms, and his political thoughts were widely discussed, with the Little Red Book being the main source. The original print run was very large and not even the first edition is an uncommon book, but copies are often well studied, or at least well-carried-around, and pristine examples such as this are rare.

First Edition
First edition in Mongolian of this collection of canonical Maoist works; as often encountered, this copy was censored in the early 1970s when the demise of Lin Biao, Mao's "closest comrade in arms", necessitated his eradication from the print culture of the Mao cult. As the Cultural Revolution picked up pace in 1966, the "Little Red Book" became an essential political accessory. After an initial burst of printing Mao's quotations as a standalone volume, publishers - without the political room to print many other titles - took to combining the quotations with other canonical Maoist texts, in particular the Chairman's poetry and his most important political writings. For many members of the 55 non-Han ethnic groups that made up around ten percent of the Chinese population at the time, their first language was not Mandarin, and a dedicated state publishing house (Minorities Press, Minzu chubanshe) produced translations such as the present text to cater to these audiences. Like most paraphernalia of the Mao cult, this work was swept up in the tide of iconoclasm that swept China after the political fall of Lin Biao, Mao's erstwhile heir-apparent. In 1971, as Lin's relationship with Mao deteriorated, he tried to flee the country with members of his family, only for his plane to crash in mysterious circumstances. Overnight, all positive references to Lin and any reminder of his former closeness to Mao became taboo. Where other copies of this volume sometimes include a facsimile plate of Lin's calligraphy and his preface, in this copy, both have been neatly excised. Most likely, this copy was in the warehouse of the publisher or state bookseller at the time of Lin's death, and the politically passé plate and preface were excised before it was approved for sale. Trigesimo-secundo. Original red vinyl, Mongolian-language title and five-pointed star to front cover in gilt. Portrait frontispiece, coloured title page and half-titles. Vinyl and gilt still bright with occasional marking to inside pockets, a little offsetting from the frontispiece, light foxing to the peripheries of the front and endleaves and a few page edges, contents else clean and bright. A near-fine copy of this fragile publication.

A remarkably well-preserved Cultural Revolution-era multipurpose accessory for studying Mao's teachings, issued in Hong Kong by a Beijing-backed bookstore committed to Maoist agitation. We have only found one other example of this set, held at Yale. This is indeed a rare propaganda collectable signifying the intrusion of politics into everyday life at the apex of the Mao cult. This set gave Mao's words a level of portability far surpassing the static format of the "Little Red Book". Owners could choose from among the 110 printed quotations covering a range of topics including the mass line, class struggle, the vanguard party, and the continuous revolution. As the box directs, "the cards should be used as follows: pull out the lid and reverse the case to display a Maoist maxim on your desk, or use the hole on the back of the case to hang it on the wall or above the bed. When out and about, keep the set in your pocket to study on the go". Here, Mao's quotations could be displayed in offices, homes and bedrooms, interchanged with ease, and studied in a free moment. The beginning of the Cultural Revolution on the Chinese mainland in 1966 quickly spilled over into the neighbouring territory of Hong Kong, with full-scale riots breaking out in May 1967 in opposition to British rule and in support of reunification with China. While at the time Mao and other senior Communist Party leaders in Beijing had no intention of reclaiming Hong Kong from the British, the riots were nonetheless stoked by an extensive Beijing-backed program of public and underground agitation. As a corollary to these actions, Beijing also sponsored a number of publishers and book distributors, including the Sanlian bookstore, to provide a steady stream of pro-China propaganda including the present item. Duodecimo. A set of 55 numbered double-sided flashcards (66 x 90 mm) containing quotations from Chairman Mao, along with a card printed with Lin Biao's calligraphic message to "read Chairman Mao's works, listen to Chairman Mao's words, act according to Chairman Mao's instructions, and be Chairman Mao's good soldier." Housed in a red and white plastic case with gilt title. With the original card box. Cards with light edge wear and occasional faint stains and creases, a few light scratches to plastic case, box lightly worn at extremities with a couple of splits to edges. Overall in excellent condition.

12mo. 1, (1 blank), 1, (1 blank), 3, (1 blank), 333 pp. With a portrait of Mao used as a frontispiece. Red vinyl cover wrapper over cardboard. Arabic translation of the "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung", popularly known as the "Little Red Book". First compiled and published in 1964, by 1970 several billion copies were printed as every Chinese citizen was more or less obliged to own and carry a copy. After the book was approved for publication outside China in 1966, the Foreign Languages Press oversaw the translation and publication of the book into dozens of languages. The Arabic translation was first published in 1967 and printed not in China but in Egypt to influence the Pan-Arabist movement. According to an article in the Peking Review, China's official foreign newspaper: "The publication [.] was enthusiastically welcomed by the revolutionary Arab masses. Some of them began to read Chairman Mao's works on the street as soon as they bought them. [.] While working hard to print the Quotations, the workers at the printing house squeezed in time to study this treasured book of revolution" (Peking Review). The "Quotations" became the inspiration for the form, if not the contents, of Muammar Gaddafi's "Green Book". - With a stamp of the "Committee on New Alternatives in the Middle East" on the front endpaper and a faded Chinese stamp on the back endpaper; a very good copy. - "Mao Tsetung thought inspires Arab people's advance", in: Peking Review 17 (25 April 1969), pp. 13-15.

First Edition
First complete edition of Quotations from Chairman Mao. Duodecimo, original wrappers as issued, frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao. Lin Biaoâ s calligraphic endorsement leaf intact after the frontispiece with the corrected superfluous brush stroke in the second line. In 1972, an edict was issued that Linâ s name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to assassinate Mao; consequently, â many surviving copies in the Chinese language have that page legitimately torn away, mutilated or censoredâ (Schiller, p. 36). In very good condition with pilgrimage stamps to the rear panel and a small name to the front free endpaper. A nice example. Printed for the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, the first edition of Mao's Quotations, was issued in two states and bindings: the uncorrected first state text in red vinyl plastic, and the corrected second state in paper wrappers. The corrected copies, issued in wrappers and intended for high-ranking officers, were released first; the uncorrected copies, issued in red vinyl and for use by brigade teams, were released shortly afterwards, as the sturdier binding took longer to manufacture. By the start of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the red vinyl design had become symbolic of Mao's slogan "The East is Red", and the paper wrappers were discontinued. The year 1966 also "signaled the start of a major translation and publication project when the Little Red Book was issued in over 50 different languages of countries where Socialism might triumph" (Schiller, p. 55). The book was printed in large quantities until Mao's death in 1976; by the late 1970s, however, a change of government meant further circulation of the book was discouraged, with millions of copies were collected and destroyed. His Little Red Book, however, sometimes referred to as the "Chinese Bible", "forms a brilliant compilation that is still readable and admired today for its political theories and strategies" (ibid., p. 57).

N.p. (probably Beijing): Central Intelligence Bureau of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, [May 1964]. First edition, first state, (with the ting) of Chairman Mao's "Little Red Book," after the Bible the most printed text in the world. Sixteenmo (5 7/16 x 3 15/16 inches; 138 x 100 mm.). [4], 2 (preface), 2 (table of contents, with thirty chapters), 250, [2, blank] pp. Complete with frontispiece portrait of Mao and Lin Biao's calligraphic endorsement leaf. Half-title printed in red, title in red and green. Wire-stitched in the original printed wrappers, small glue residue around stitches. A few blue ink spots on front cover due to previous owner's homemade dust jacket ink soaking through a bit to front cover. Edges bumped. A very good copy. Housed in a custom black cloth clamshell case. This first state, of which around 50,000-60,0000 copies were printed, was never intended for sale, but issued to members of the military as inspirational reading. By 1967, the book had been translated into more that thirty-six languages and an estimated 720 million copies had been printed. Now, thirty-five years later, almost certainly more than one billion copies have printed worldwide. The printing history of Mao's "Little Red Book" (actually entitled "Quotations from the Chairman Mao") is partially obscured due to its great rarity and the fact that the very earliest printing is undated. This original first printing of selections from Mao Zedong's (1893-1976) writings and speeches was originally conceived and produced in May 1964 for military use as a pocket handbook of inspirational reading, intended by army General Lin Biao (1907-1971) to flatter Chairman Mao and improve his own advancement within the Party. Clearly even he never realized the popularity and impact of this anthology. The initial demand proved so popular that it was reprinted several times in 1965: with two additional chapters added to the second edition (March 1965) and a final thirty-third chapter added to the third edition (August 1965). By 1966, it was decided that every citizen must possess a copy (as a symbol of loyalty to the Party) and a massive printing project was created to translate the text in every language where there would be Communist followers or sympathizers. This first edition is slightly taller in height than all the later editions and collates with fewer letterpress pages. The book originally included a calligraphic endorsement in facsimile of Lin Biao's handwriting and also has a two-page introductory preface by Lin, telling of the book's importance as a guide for daily life and moral precept. But, following Lin's alleged unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Mao in September 1971, an effort was made to obliterate his existence from recent memory, and everyone was instructed to tear out this endorsement page (and sometimes also the preface). Neither was included in copies printed from the end of 1971 onwards. Remarkably, our copy retains the endorsement leaf, a fact which would certainly have jeopardized the safety of its owner. First edition, first printing, finely bound, of Mao's "Little Red Book". This copy is in the corrected text state and retains the Lin Biao calligraphic endorsement leaf with an incorrect extra brush stroke in one of the characters. The first edition of Quotations From Chairman Mao, compiled for internal use within the People's Liberation Army two years before the Cultural Revolution, was issued either in red vinyl plastic or in paper wrappers, with all first editions containing 250 numbered pages of text. According to the editor in charge, those in wrappers were issued first for the individual use of high-ranking officers, while those in vinyl, which took longer to produce, were intended for brigades of up to eight men. As Schiller notes, copies issued in wrappers do not contain a typesetting error found on pp. 82-3 in some copies in vinyl. Justin Schiller, Quotations of Chairman Mao 1964-2014; A Short Bibliographical Study, 2014. Duodecimo. Finely bound in red morocco by the Chelsea Bindery, spine with gilt-dotted raised bands and title and star in gilt, onlay of Mao on front board, twin rule to turn-ins in gilt, black endpapers, gilt edges, original wrappers bound in at front.
