First Edition
First American Edition (& 1st printing). Tall octavo, original rust brown cloth decorated in black and lettered in gold on spine and front panel. Pp [i]- [vi], 15-432, Inserted frontispiece portrait of Twain, title page printed in red and black, Profusely illustrated in the margins throughout. The First Issue, with all first printing points described in BAL 3442: integral title page; frontispiece with Twain's facsimile autograph measuring 1 7/16" wide; and text block bulking to 1 1/8". A few minor stains to the binding, pp 80-84 & 226-227 with stains, browning to endpapers; overall an attractive, near Very Good copy in a nice state of preservation. Haycraft-Queen cornerstone; featuring the first fictional use of fingerprints. This novel successfully straddled two literary traditions. The recurrent (in the 19th century and earlier) theme of mistaken identity or mixed up birth (i.e. this author's own earlier book The Prince and the Pauper) is resolved in this story by the very modern forensic science employing fingerprints. The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, is an important complement to Huckleberry Finn. Although he began writing the book as a comedy, it soon became clear that it actually was a serious statement on slavery, race relations, and miscegenation.

Otherwise, a fine copy. 8vo; 9 inches tall; 432 pages; with marginal illustrations. Told in typical Twain fashion, infants switched at birth reveal their true colors genetics takes primacy over environment. Set during the early years of the 19th century, this pre-Civil War satire tackles social commentary issues still being debated today. Twain presents the reader with a light-skinned black mother switching her infant with her white master's to prevent her own child being raised as a slave. Twain uses humor and irony in revealing seething levels of racism and classicism. A crime novel featuring the first fictional use of fingerprints. Second Edition [first published in 1894].

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. frontis, illustrations in margins, 432p. Original brick colored cloth. 23cm. Backstrip has narrow uniform loss of top edge, some wear and minor loss of cloth at bottom and the gilt is almost entirely gone from publisher's name at base. Some weat at corners with modest loss of cloth. Internally sound and clean. An attractive copy. An entertaining and rather clever tale that somehow never captivated the public as well as the best of Twain even though it contains his inimitable mix of bigotry, prejudice, and other human frailties. Perhaps it is just because the tale is relatively short and less entertaining or maybe it is just that we like many of his other heroes more than Pudd'nhead. Most of the tale revolves around a good African American twin and a bad white twin, but Twain adds a twist. Blanck's BAL 3442. 1st Amer. ed. 1st state (sheets bulk 1 1/8" and so on).
