    First fully illustrated edition, one of 250 large paper copies issued in the UK with the illustrations specially printed on China paper and laid down; a further 25 copies were released in the US. This was the first edition to feature illustrations accompanying the text, as Bentley's 1833 edition and subsequent printings had featured only a frontispiece. Thomson's "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). Octavo (258 x 178 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark green morocco, spine lettered gilt, peacock feather with burgundy morocco onlaid piece in each compartment separated by raised bands, front board elaborately gilt-blocked with peacock design and burgundy morocco onlaid pieces, decoration to turn-ins gilt, burgundy endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With 101 fine line illustrations printed on fine tissue paper and mounted onto the page. Some occasional light foxing, an excellent copy in a fine binding.

Recent full morocco, Cosway style, binding by Temple Bookbinders, raised bands, spine in six panels, blue leather title label to second panel with matching author label to fourth, remaining panels gilt, with central pink rose and gilt volute corner pieces, date to foot of spine. Covers with double line border, floral spray corner pieces with pink roses, upper cover with sunken central panel containing a watercolour on vellum by Martin Frost, after an illustration from the book by Hugh Thomson, gilt roll to inner edges, a.e.g. with Cockerell marbled endpapers, and hand sewn endbands. Externally near fine, internally bright and clean, very good indeed. Full page frontispiece, with another one hundred illustrations and headpieces as China paper proofs, laid down. One of two hundred and fifty copies for England (with another twenty-five copies for America) of the handmade large paper edition of the famous 'Peacock' edition. The watercolour on vellum by Martin Frost replicates the illustration by Thomson on page 67, titled 'No, no, stay where you are'. Advert about the sale of the original drawings loosely inserted. There are no signatures, bookplates, or markings of any other kind. The book has five raised bands to the spine and gilt lettering and design to the spine. The original Peacock binding is bound in the rear of the book.The pages are all somewhat wrinkled. The front board is nearly detached. This is the rare "Peacock" Edition, published by George Allen in 1894. It features 101 black and white illustrations by Hugh Thomson, all of which are present. A great chance to own a rare edition of Austen's classic work.
