VG PB. Written by Twain during the Philippine-American War tells of a patriotic church service held to send the town's young men off to war. A stranger enters and tells the crowd that by praying for victory they are also praying for the destruction of the enemy, the destruction of human life. Originally rejected for publication in 1905 as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine, this antiwar parable remained unpublished until 1913 when Twain's literary executor collected it in the volume Europe and Elsewhere. Illustrated by John Groth.
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Illustrated by John Groth (illustrator). After reading it Twain was asked if he was going to publish it. His reply: "'No, ' he said. I have told the whole truth in that, and only dead men can tell the truth in this world. It can be published after I am dead." ; Drawings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

1st trade paperback printing. Originally written around 1905 but not published until 1916, after the death of Twain, this scathing indictment of war and blind patriotic fever should be read by everyone - "O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; . . help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it. For our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!" Illustrated with drawings by John Groth. Unpaginated. Very good in glossy illustrated wrappers.
Pamphlet. Condition: Very Good. Unmarked. 8p. Measures 5.5x8.5 inches. During the Philippine-American War, Twain wrote a short pacifist story titled The War Prayer, which makes the point that humanism and Christianity's preaching of love are incompatible with the conduct of war. It was submitted to Harper's Bazaar for publication, but on March 22, 1905, the magazine rejected the story as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine".
