Leather. Condition: Near Fine. D G Rossetti (illustrator). A smartly bound, uncommon, second edition of important poem. Written by the esteemed poet, Christina Rossetti. Containing an early appearance of her well-known poem 'Goblin Market'. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and pictorial title page from designs by D G Rossetti. The second edition of this work. Comprising of the titular poem, and numerous additional poems and devotional pieces. This work was Rossetti's first publication. This is therefore the second edition of her important poem, 'Goblin Market'. The poem was composed in 1859, and is Rossetti's longest poem. It is the most widely known and read of all her works and launched her literary career. It is believed that 'Goblin Market' inspired Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. 'Goblin Market' explores themes of temptation, sacrifice and salvation. Biographers and critics have argued that the themes of temptation, sexual exchange and sisterly redemption in this poem are influenced by its poet"s experience working as an "Associate Sister" at Highgate (British Library). It tells the story of Laura and Lizzie who are tempted with fruit by Goblin merchants. An extremely smart, and very bright copy of this important poem. In a full calf binding, with gilt stamping to the spine and extremities. Externally, very smart, with light shelfwear to the joint sand extremities. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Beatrix. M . Muirhead from her affectionate brother, Bertram A Muirhead Jan 1 1867.' Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Scattered spots to the endpapers. Otherwise, pages are clean. Near Fine. book.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Very Good. This selection of the poetic work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (18281892) emphasizes the 'pure poetry' of his lyrical approach to show how he paved the way for both the Modernists and the French Symbolists. Including a generous selection of his translations, it also provides both biographical and critical introductions.' Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.
