Originally published by Lea and Blanchard 1841, as the First U.S. Edition, this is the 1849 reissue that would subsequently be followed by Getz Buck & Co., for their first edition in the year 1852. Text double column. Running title, "Master Humphrey's Clock." Frontispiece & 1841 engraved title "The Old Curiosity Shop" [from Lea & Blanchard]. 7 inserted plates by Sibson, engraved by Yeager. Numerous woodcuts - intra-textual cuts. [3-iv] + [5-vi], [9-362]pp. 8vo. 9-1/4" x 5-7/8." Original publisher's brown cloth binding with gilt stamped title lettering & Dickensian figures to spine; blind-stamped decor to boards. Corners are slightly bumped, but the main problem is the binding; this copy is split twice, leaving it in 3 portions. The first break is on the front cover hinge all the way up from foot to head of spine, however, almost the entire spine has stayed in tact, in its cloth; chipping to head/foot of spine as well: this part is in tact in binding to the Frontis page; Then the title page up to page 104, as the second part; and finally, page 105 to the rear board. Prev. owners bookplate FEP. Clean Interior. No markings. No foxing. PHOTOS ARE INCLUDED to support this items condition. --D. B. Box 12.
