Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Robert Gillmor (illustrator). First Edition, First Printing. In a plastic cover, lovely copy. This is the scarce first edition though sadly with no dust jacket.206pp 'The primary purpose of this book is to summarise the results and achievements of the first 11 years ' work by Cape Clear Observatory'. So says Sharrock, the Editor, who has collated and guided the various specialist authors throughout this book. Although most is devoted to birds, along with lists of birds summarising the status of every species recorded on the island and with histograms showing seasonal patterns, there are many other short chapters written by experts in their field on other aspects of the natural history. These include slugs and snails, dolphins, butterflies, mosses and seaweed etc.

Book First Edition
First edition, 1973. Hardback. 207pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Publisher's original cloth boards with gilt to spine. Illustrated by Robert Gillmor. Cape Clear island, the most southerly point of Ireland, apart from the nearby Fastnet Rock, has been the site of a bird observatory since 1959. This account of the island, its flora, fauna, inhabitants and history, is weighted in favour of the birds but this is inevitable since the island offers so much of exceptional ornithological interest. The book's coverage is wide - ranging from Killer Whales to the rare Kerry Slug and the Lusitanian flora that south-west Ireland shares with Iberia. Anyone with a general interest in natural history will find chapters on a variety of topics, each written by an acknowledged expert. For the bird watcher the book is rich in fascinating material - not least the detailed list of species (accompanied by many maps and over 130 histograms), sections on sea watching and seabird studies, and an account of the ornithological year. Robert Gillmor's evocative pen and ink illustrations are liberally mingled with the text. Those who already know the island's varied charms will surely have their memories reawakened by this eminently readable book, and those yet to visit this unique place will be enticed to do so. Book in very good condition. Some faint markings to free end papers where they had been in contact with the back of tape used to secure a protective cover for the jacket (this jacket and its tape have been replaced with a more suitable protective wrapper). The book seems to have been otherwise well cared for and is very clean and bright - just a faint mustiness but no sign of any damp or mould etc. Dust jacket very good. Unclipped. Just a little very light edge wear and a small nick to the head of the spine. Spine slightly discoloured. Book.
