This is the first US edition of the work by British author, Joyce Gard. There was a UK edition published in the same year. This novel tells the tale of a thirteen-year-old girl named Astria who has been given the burden of being the mortal embodiment of the mermaid goddess. Set in ancient Britain, Astria must deal with the constant struggle of good and evil, while debating peace and conflict in her community. Joyce Gard based this story on the reality that annual pilgrimages were made to the Scilly Isles to honor the great mermaid goddess. In the novel, Astria must honor her role by never leaving the island, however, love intervenes, making things difficult.With maps included depicting the Isle of Scilly and South Western Britain.
