Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. A first UK edition, published in 1946 - the translator is not mentioned. The book was originally published in the German language by Leipzig K Wolff, Berlin in 1918. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards, with dark-blue titles to the spine. The boards are clean, with just light marks and browning at the edges commensurate with the age of the book. The front board is slightly flared. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. Top edge of the page block sightly darkened. Internally the pages are clean with virtually no foxing - just some off-setting to the front and rear endpapers. Ownership name in green ink to the front free endpaper, but no other annotations. The paper used is quite thin [due to post-war restrictions still in force] but there are no creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In the original illustrated dustwrapper, which is largely complete, but there is some loss at the head of the spine, and slight loss to the top edge of the front panel near the foldover. There is also a 4cm closed tear and some associated creasing to the top edge of the back panel. Some light rubbing, nicks and creases at the extremities. The colour of the front panel of the dustwrapper is bright and unfaded, but the spine is slightly browned and the red lettering has faded. The yellow back panel is nice and clean. **190mm x 134mm. 286 pages. ***'Luiz (Ludwig) Heinrich Mann (27 Mar 1871 - 11 Mar 1950) was a German novelist who wrote works with social themes. From 1930 until 1933, he was president of the fine poetry division of the Prussian Academy of Arts. His fierce criticism of the growing Fascism and Nazism forced him to flee Germany after the Nazis came to power during 1933. Mann's essay on Émile Zola and the novel "Der Untertan" (published over the years 1912-1918) earned him much respect during the Weimar Republic, since they satirized Imperial German society. Together with Albert Einstein and other celebrities during 1932, Mann was a signatory to the "Urgent Call for Unity", asking the voters to reject the Nazis. Mann became persona non grata in Nazi Germany and left even before the Reichstag fire of 1933. He went to France where he lived in Paris and Nice. During the German occupation, he made his way to Marseille, where he was aided by Varian Fry in September 1940 to escape to Spain. Assisted by Justus Rosenberg, he and his wife Nelly Kröger, his nephew Golo Mann, Alma Mahler-Werfel and Franz Werfel hiked for six hours across the border at Port Bou. After arriving in Portugal, the group stayed in Monte Estoril, at the Grande Hotel D?Itália, between 18 Sep and 4 Oct 1940. On 4 Oct 1940, they boarded the S.S. Nea Hellas, headed for New York City. The Nazis burnt Heinrich Mann's books as "contrary to the German spirit" during the infamous book burning of May 10, 1933, which was instigated by the then Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.' [Wiki] ***A first UK edition, in the original dustwrapper. An uncommon title, especially in the dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
