Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Margaret Tempest (illustrator). 1st Edition. 63pp. Stated: "First Impression May 1940"; this copy: "Fourteenth Impression May1969". Lovely color illustrations throughout. Illustrated boards with grey background and a myriad of "snowflakes" surrounding a circular picture of three bunnies in the snow, two pulling a sled with presents and the third bunny; title and author name lettering in red superimposed upon the grey and falling snow background at top front cover; Illustrator name in red letters across bottom center front cover; Illustrated endpapers in brown ink over cream paper. Nugatory, tiny wear and inward curls to corners and spine corners; triangular (hypotenuse), diminishing echo, mini-creases across tops of pp. 9-20; mini- vertical creases up from lower edges of both covers, but the very minor wrinkles to paste-downs suggest the book manufacturing process created the foibles, not careless use. Binding still tight (no creases to spine); corners still essentially square; no previous owner names; virtually no rubbing wear. Clean text. Solid, charming book. This is the way to read a Children's classic, nearly 50 years old.

The dust jacket is in good condition with internal foxing , some light edge wear, and a small spot on the back. 7 x 5 ¾, 62 pages, 6 ounces. [From the dust jacket flap] It had been snowing for hours. The trees and hedges were covered with winter wraps and the fields were hidden under thick blankets. Then Grey Rabbit came back from market, riding on a scarlet sledge, carrying parcels for all the family. That was a wonderful Christmas with carol singers and holly decorations, with presents and games and reading aloud. At night they went to visit Moldy Warp. In the wood was a lighted Christmas tree for all the little animals to enjoy Christmas. XX Little Grey Rabbit lives in a cottage with Squirrel and Hare. She is very fond of both of them, although she knows that Hare likes to boast, and Squirrel is vain. She has many other friends too ?Moldy Warp the Mole, slow and sensible, the Hedgehogs with their young son Fuzzypeg, Wise Owl, Water Rat, and the Speckledy Hen. [Wikipedia info] Alison Uttley (17 December 1884 : 7 May 1976), née Alice Jane Taylor, was a British writer of over 100 books. She is best known for a children's series about Little Grey Rabbit and Sam Pig. She is also remembered for a pioneering time slip novel for children, A Traveller in Time, about the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. Born in Cromford and brought up in rural Derbyshire, she was educated at the Lea School in Holloway and the Lady Manners School in Bakewell, where she developed a love for science which led to a scholarship to Manchester University to read physics. After leaving university, she trained as a teacher in Cambridge and in 1908 took up a post as physics teacher at Fulham Secondary School for Girls in West London. In 1911 she married James Arthur Uttley, and in 1914 had her only child, John Corin Taylor. James Uttley was prone to depression and drowned himself in the River Mersey in 1930. In 1938 she moved to Beaconsfield, where Enid Blyton was a neighbor whom she came greatly to dislike. She also quarreled bitterly with her best known illustrator, Margaret Tempest. Her first books were a series of tales about animals, including Little Grey Rabbit, The Little Red Fox, Sam Pig and Hare. She later wrote for older children and adults, particularly focusing on rural topics, notably in The Country Child (1931), a fictionalized account of her childhood experiences at her family farm home. XX Margaret Mary Tempest (1892 :1982) was a British illustrator and author, best known for her illustrations of Alison Uttley's Little Grey Rabbit books. Margaret Tempest was born in 1892 in Ipswich, Suffolk, where she lived most of her life. She attended the Westminster School of Art and was co-founder of the Chelsea Illustrators Club. From 1929 until the 1960s she illustrated the Little Grey Rabbit books, as well as other children's books.
