Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Robert McCloskey (Author & Illustrator) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Ex-Lib. Text/Near New, w/loss of 2nd page of illustrated front endpapers, which is printed again in the rear. Vintage, First 1940 Edition; 9th Printing of 1964. Illustrated boards/VG. DJ/None. Classic tale set in the town ofAlto, Ohio of Early America. 8th story told & illustrated by the celebrated author of children' books John Robert McCloskey (1914 - 2003). The gentle town of Alto enjoyed a public library, and, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, both gifted from native son Colonel Carter. Young Lentil loved music; but unable to pucker his lips, could neither sing nor whistle, took on the harmonica. Alto was also home to disgruntled, unhappy Old Sneep, who spent his time broadcasting his discomfort sucking lemons & slurping on a park bench. This episode begins w/Colonel Carter's homecoming to build a town hospital. Just as the train pulls in, Old Sneep starts nonstop slurping paralyzing puckering abilities of the band & other musicians. Lentli's harmonica takes over w/the Colonel singing along, so the welcoming parade commences. Lentil is eventually exhausted, the Colonel takes over!!! He is another harmonica player called upon puckering of lips!!! Strong copy despite flaws, deserving of a home.
