Item Description: Peacock/ Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd., 2005. Softcover. Book Condition: New. . (illustrator). First edition. . Regarded notoriously pornographic when published in 1928, the novel is a triumph of passion, an erotic celebration of life, exploring the emotions of a lonely woman, Constance Chatterley, trapped in a sterile marriage and her growing love for Mellors, the robust gamekeeper of her husband s estate, in whose arms she finds refuge and feels regenerated. Together they shield themselves from the chaos of the outer world and move to the sanctum of the inner world of fulfilment. Then to everyone s surprise, she makes the firm resolution! The scenes of intimate beauty, the description of nature, people, emotions, thought and actions, class struggles and most importantly the similies and the lyrical style of the novel are enough to sweep off reader s feet so much so that one is sure to rush off to get yet another Lawrence s novel. Lawrence Durrell rightly remarked, Nobody concerned with the novel in our country can afford not to read it. Printed Pages: 320. Bookseller Inventory # 6111

Item Description: New York Alfred A. Knopf 1932, 1932. First American edition, authorized and abridged. 8vo, original peach cloth lettered in black on the upper cover, the spine lettered in black and with extensive decoration in green and black. Remnants of inner flaps of the dustjacket affixed to the front and rear endpapers. 327pp. An acceptable copy of this very hard to find edition of one of the most famous and controversial works of the 20th century. The cloth in nice shape with just a bit of fading on the spine, internally clean but just a bit shaken, lending library ink stamp on front free-fly. A very uncommon edition of Lawrence’s most famous work. Knopf’s was the first authorized American edition. This issue is quite scarce, the Grosset and Dunlap reissue being usually the one found. At the time of this publication the only unabridged editions were either privately printed or pirated. It was not until 1960 that Penguin Books in London took on the risk of publishing it in full and was consequently prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The later acquittal proved a victory for not only the eminent authors who appeared as witnesses at the celebrated trial (including E.M. Forster, R. Hoggart, and H. Gardner) and Penguin Books, but for freedom of the press, writing and publishing in general. Bookseller Inventory # 20729
