Hardcover. 114 p.; 20.5 cm. `When Christians first approach Judaism, they become increasingly puzzled not by what is there, but by what is missing. At the centre there is a hole, and it is just where the Temple should be. The priests and the sacrifices have gone. There are no holocausts,no sacraments, and no mystery. Catholics feel this even more than Protestants. They recognise an organic connection with traditional Judaism, but in the centre Judaism seems to be as bare as the most austere Protestant sect.Where has it all gone? I suggest that they are looking inthe wrong place.Jewish history has not made for triumphalism, but for humility. The birthplace of the Christian mystery was not the Temple, but a room on the upper floor of a lodging house in Jerusalem. The things that Jesus saw and touched that evening he could find today in a traditional Jewish home. The great Temple ended. Part of its inheritance, combining oddly with the Latin culture of Rome, entered into the Christian church. In Judaism the inheritance came to rest in the privacy of the home. The entry of this refugee, this fallen greatness, transfigured the nature of the house, and its occupants. The father became a priest, the mother a priest ess, and the dining-room table an altar.' (p. 41 f.) -- `It is called the `Shema' because it opens `Listen!' or `Hear!'. This is not said quietly, but loudly.God does not have tobe told that he is One.but our fellow Jews do. Weremind our relatives, the family of Israel, ofthe reality which governs our destiny. The key Jewish prayer is therefore really not said to God at all, it is said to ourselves, and, above all, we say it at each other.' (p. 63) VG orig. green cloth in edgeworn green dj.
