First Edition
First edition of the fifth book in the author's beloved series. 16mo, original cloth, illustrated. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Scarce. Crockett Johnsonâ "a pen name for David Johnson Lieskâ "was â a cartoonist whose simplest, sparest and boldest outlines produced unforgettable, gently humorous and always endearing caricaturesâ ¦ His natural gift for drawing and writing from a young childâ s viewpoint enabled him to craft more than 20 juvenile books,â including this, his most popular one. â With the fewest of lines, Johnson depicts Harold as a toddler clad in sleepers, his chubby hand gripping a fat plum-colored crayon. From page to page, the thick, firm, purple mark delineates Haroldâ s actions against the stark white background so effectively and ingeniously that the crayon is as much a character as Harold. The same economy that informs Johnsonâ s art permeates his text; he writes so concisely of Haroldâ s moonlight stroll that his style perfectly echoes the clarity of his boldly outlined cartoon illustrationsâ (Silvey, 355).
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Crockett Johnson (illustrator). 1st Edition. This FIRST edition from 1959 is in near fine condition with clean interior pages and a pictorial cover with only the tiniest bit of edge wear. The dust jacket is good with chipping and wear on edges and corners. The book is about Harold who draws anything ( in this case a circus) with his purple crayon. There are several other "Harold" books as well. Picture available upon request.
Pictorial boards. Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Crckett Johnson (illustrator). A solid copy of the 1959 1st edition of this, the 5th title in the wonderful "Harold and the Purple Crayon" series. Tight and VG+ (light abrading along the front panel's upper tip) in a bright, price-intact ($1.50), VG dustjacket, with very light creasing --and several small closed tears-- to the panel edges, minor soiling at the rear panel and just a touch of light chipping at the spine ends. Still though, attractive and very presentable. 64mo (miniature), "An Astounding, Colossal, Purple Crayon Event!" (from the title page).
