XX [From the dust jacket flaps] ?With this notable and distinguished work, the fullest of all biographies of Roosevelt is brilliantly launched," wrote J. G. Randall of FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT: THE APPRENTICESHIP, the first volume of Professor Frank Freidel's projected six-volume life of the late President, Historians everywhere agreed that here was the first -- to quote Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. ? volume of what promises to be the most complete and careful life of Franklin Roosevelt we will have in our time." Now, in THE ORDEAL, Frank Freidel goes on with the Roosevelt story "in this amazing second volume of his monumental biography. For those who want that full story without either rose-tinted glasses or the spectacles of smear, Dr. Freidel alone offers it," writes Jonathan Daniels. "His detailed and documented book is both fascinating reading and one of the most brilliant works of scholarship about any American in our time. "THE ORDEAL tells of the forgotten years in Roosevelt's life from the end of his Navy career and the beginnings of polio to his election as Governor of New York in the year in which the Democratic party seemed in every other case almost finally destroyed. These will not be forgotten veers any longer. Roosevelt partisans, Roosevelt patriots and just Americans interested in the American story will find Dr. Freidel's report one of the most important books of the decade." "When I reached the end of the story of this period from which Roosevelt emerged at last as an outstanding national figure," says Spencer Brodney, "I felt I knew him far more intimately than during all the years I had been watching him play his part in the drama of domestic and foreign affairs. The reason for this is the insight and skill with which Dr. Freidel has handled his multitudinous material and selected and brought together the facts that make for an absorbingly interesting and exciting narrative, and provide a fuller understanding of Roosevelt's unique and many-sided personality." "The portrait of the young Roosevelt and the emerging politician is sharply and shrewdly done. Mr. Freidel has performed in this volume one of the most difficult tasks of a biographer; to describe in detail the formative years of a man who later became a gigantic figure and he has performed it brilliantly. The easy literary style of the author should appeal to many readers. His research has been tremendous, but he never lets his story get bogged down with insignificant detail. Roosevelt lovers and haters should appreciate his fairness. It is heartening to see a young scholar set out so promisingly to accomplish such a grand design.
