Book First Edition
Original paper boards. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Viii pp + 375 pages + 8 leaves of adverts at rear dated March 1818. 5 Engraved plates 4 tinted aquatints and one rondo stone litho vignette, in original two tone paper boards the spine has mostly perished, as happens with these fragile early original period sugar paper boards, boards also detached but complete, the title page and endpaper also detached and lacks ffep. This copy has all edges uncut and wide margins. Some light browning to the plates and a few pages. Despite the faults, the book is rare and even more so in its original printers issued boards of the time. Tall octavo. Dated 1819 [But 1818] *Marianne Baillie was an English traveller, poet and author of the 19th century, who wrote four books, two being collections of verse, and the others being descriptions of her travels in Europe all are scarce, she died in 1831. The inclusion of the Murray advert leaves indicate this was published in 1818 and not 1819 as stated on title.

First Edition
First edition. 8vo, contemporary acid-stained brown calf, gilt decorated and lettered spine. Frontispiece, three aquatint illustrations and one engraved plate, probably after illustrations by the author. The first of two travel narratives by English poet Marianne Baillie (1775-1831), written with a "ladylike attitude to touring" (Robinson), in which she extols the beautiful, but is easily uncomfortable with surroundings to which she is unaccustomed. In her reserved preface, Baillie apologizes for leaning toward romance in her prose and an inclination to imitate the travel writing of Ann Radcliffe. The artist of the aquatint illustrations is not identified, but Baillie did the illustrations in a similar style for her second travelogue about Portugal, and it is likely she did these as well. Contemporary bookplate on the front paste-down. Some light foxing and stains; fine copy. Robinson, Wayward Women, page 275; Pine-Coffin, page 175.
