Superb inscription from the author to Eric Hosking, this copy has Erirc Hoskings bookplate tipped onto the front pastedown. A very good association copy. [Eric Hosking OBE, Hon FRPS, FBIPP (1909-1991) was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers, "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" (Gemma Padley). He was pioneering and developed new techniques, especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology, which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously, when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales, the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird", 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist.] Size: 8vo. Book.

John George Williams (1913-1997) was born in Cardiff, Wales and was one of Africa s great ornithologists. He met his wife Philippa in Aleppo, Syria during the war, were married in Cairo after the war, and settled in Kenya. From 1946 to 1966 he was Curator of Birds at the Coryndon (now National) Museum in Nairobi. His first book for both locals and tourists was A Field Guide to the Birds of East and Central Africa, followed by a Field Guide to the National Parks of East Africa, and then, in 1969, this volume, A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Africa. Williams was not just a bird specialist; his interests in natural history were wide-ranging, from bats to beetles and even plants: He authored Field Guide to the Orchids of Britain and Europe and Field Guide to the Orchids of North America. Williams and his wife returned to England in 1978 where he continued working in new books and a variety of natural history projects. Inscribed by Author(s).
