Hardcover. 2nd printing. xii, 307 pages; 62 illus. in text; 23 cm. (L. P. Stone lectures ; 1967) From the preface: `Erasmus of Rotterdam has never had his due. The reason is in part that he founded no church to perpetuate his memory. I have long been drawn to Erasmus on a number of counts. I share his aversion to contention, his abhorrence of war, his wistful skepticism with respect to that which transcends the verifiable; at the same time I am warmed by the glow of his piety. I am convinced of the soundness of the place assigned by him to the classical alongside of the Judaeo-Christian in the heritage of the Western world. I relish his whimsicality and satire. I endorse his conviction that language is still the best medium for the transmission of thought, language not merely read but heard with cadence and rhythm as well as clarity and precision. Yet I should probably never have undertaken this assignment were Erasmus lacking in contemporary relevance. He is important for the dialogue which he desired never to see closed between Catholics and Protestants. He is important for the strategy of reform, violent or non-violent. He was resolved to abstain from violence alike of word and deed, but was not sure that significant reform could be achieved sine tumultu. He would neither incite nor abet it. The more intolerant grew the contenders, the more he recoiled and strove to mediate. He ended as the battered liberal. Can it ever be otherwise? This is precisely the problem of our time.' Hardcover with dustjacket. Condition: Gut. XII, 307 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, mit Randläsuren, sonst guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, with edge wear, otherwise good condition. - The celebrated Reformation scholar Roland H. Bainton portrays once again that period of the high Renaissance and early Reformation when the stability of the political order, the accepted truths of philosophy, and the solaces of religion were everywhere breaking into wild disorder. His subject is an ambiguous and complex man Erasmus of Rotterdam, born a pauper, the illegitimate son of a priest, plagued by poor health and a thin purse, who was sought everywhere for his wit and erudition. No man in Europe had so many friends in high places as Erasmus: a life-long cosmopolitan, he moved from country to country following the uncertain chance of preferments, speaking the lingua franca of his day Latin finding lodgings in royal palaces and the households of public printers. He was on intimate terms with Thomas More and Henry VIII; he corresponded with Martin Luther and Pope Adrian. A true man of letters, he wrote and translated tirelessly; arguing, teaching, campaigning for the purification of the Church. He ridiculed the worldly prelates of the Church and deplored the Reformers who broke communion with Rome. Though his pen could deliver punishing stings to those he sought to correct, he loved peace and hated dissension. In controversies he sought to avoid taking an ultimate stand and on all occasions spoke out for moderation of thought and behavior. He devoted his life to Concordia, Humanitas, and Pietas, to the wisdom of the classical writers, and to a Christianity of the inward spirit. Education was his goal, the printing press his instrument. But instead of leading men to the moderating influence of classical Christian humanism, Erasmus lived to see many friends imprisoned, beheaded, or burned for their beliefs and himself accused of heresy. Not since his death has he received the critical attention that is his due. Although he is the best-known of the sixteenth-century humanists, his reputation has lagged far behind that of the major reformers; Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and Melanchthon. Roland H. Bainton here highlights the essentials of Erasmian interpretation. Through charming, and frequently humorous, glimpses of the people and scenes of Erasmus life, Professor Bainton suggests the amplitude of his hero s nature. But true to the spirit of Erasmus, the author has sought less to dramatize his personality than to indicate the scope of his thought. The development of personality was not Erasmus concern, but rather erudition. / Table of Contents 1. MONASTICISM: HOLLAND 2. SCHOLASTICISM AND ELOQUENCE: PARIS 3.
