Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Dustwrapper (by the author) very faintly faded at spine. With the bookplate of Sir Michael Holroyd, his pencillings in the text and manuscript notes on the rear free endpaper. "Dromengro is the Gypsy word for Man of the Road, and Sven Berlin, from the moment that he fled city life in pursuit of freedom and in search of a dream, has been a dromengro indeed. In this fiercely poetic and haunting book he tells of his quest for the Gypsy people; the real Gypsy that still existed, half hidden by the tapestries and poems that had been woven around him, 'dragging with him the magic of Ur, the gold of Syria, his music and dancing and skills with horses'" (dustwrapper blurb).

First Edition
Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Sven Berlin (dust jacket and frontispiece) (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo. Pp. [10], 11- 255, [1]. Frontis. illustration by the author. With a bibliography and a idioticon of Gypsy words. Bound in dark brown cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. First three and last three leaves with light foxing. In the illustrated dust jacket, price of two pounds intact on front flap. Berlin was associated with the St. Ives Group of artists, including Herbert Read, Ben Nicholson, Bernard Leach, et al. This is his pensive search for Gypsy life, following in the 19th c. shoes of George Borrow, only to find their age-old ways of life have come to dreary ends: "the exceptional, the eccentric, or the nomadic" traits have been extinguished by modernity. The dust jacket illustration is spectacular, presenting color and dynamism typical of Berlin's brush. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
