Larry Brown (1951 - 2004) was an American novelist, non-fiction and short story writer. He won numerous awards, including the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters award for fiction, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Award, and Mississippi's Governor's Award For Excellence in the Arts. He was also the first two-time winner of the Southern Book Award for Fiction. He has been compared to other Southern writers, including Cormac McCarthy, William Faulkner, and Harry Crews. In interviews and some of his essays, Brown cited these authors, along with Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, and Charles Bukowski, as influences. 'Dirty Work' is the story of two strangers one white, the other black. Born and raised in Mississippi, both fought in Vietnam. Both were gravely wounded. Now, twenty-two years later, the two men lie in adjacent beds in a VA hospital. Over the course of a day and a night, Walter James and Braiden Chaney talk of memories, of passions, and of fate. With great vision, humor, and courage, Brown writes mostly about love in a story that delineates the waste of war. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 246 pages.
