Full-Leather. Condition: Near Good. Volume II only but still is very useful. A GRAMMAR OF THE ITALIAN TONGUE, xlviii Pages precedes a complete English to Italian Dictionary. Text arranged in Triple Columns. Contemporary Brown Full-Leather Binding, spine divided by Horizontal Lines. Gilt "Italian Dictionary" in 2nd "Compartment". Dictionary Unpaginated, book is 1 1/2" thick. 8 3/4" Tall, 760g. Splits to leather down sides of spine, front board still attached, rear board detached but present. Some scrapes & scuffs to leather and some small bits missing near spine (see photos). Antique Bookplate on Endpaper, "Captain Frederick Rogers, R. N.". No other inscriptions. Pages in very good, clean condition, only a very occasional spot of foxing. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.

Previous owner's inscription on ffep and opposite title page. A little browning on eps but text clean throughout. bound in contemporary full tan leather with gilt lettering on black spine label. Boards worn. Hinges cracked. Chips missing from top and bottom of spine. Top, bottom and edges of spine rubbed. Corners of boards much rubbed. Edges of boards rubbed in places. Surface of leather boards rubbed in places - one patch on front board and towards bottom corner of back board and adjacent to spine. Overall condition Good+.

Owner's 1983 inscription, earlier owner's name. Both volumes been rebound smartly - at some point in the 20th century? Block edges worn and a little ragged, though evenly so. Some foxing to opening/closing pages, text clean overall; block is a little crinkly in each volume; light wear only and faint isolated stains to spine and boards. First edition to come under outside editorship, 4to, 2 vols. in 1, pp. [3], vi-xxxiv, plus unpaginated lexicon; [4], xxxix, [1], plus unpaginated lexicon; possibly lacking a half-title; the English title bound before the Italian, the Italian before the English; occasional spots and stains, and internally very good; full contemporary mottled calf rehinged, the whole scuffed and rubbed with a few minor chips out. Strongly based on Altieri, Baretti's dictionary was first published in 1760. Several editions ensued; this edition was edited and published within a year after Baretti's death. Vancil, p. 19.
