Counterpoint is the art of stating a melody, or melodies, among two or more voices. A round is a simple form of counterpoint which makes use of a single melody. Canons and fugues are more complex, again making use of a single melody or melodic segment but abiding by strict rules regarding melodic variation, as in the canon, or regarding repetition of the melodic segment among as many as five voices always a fifth or fourth interval higher or lower. Counterpoint is the driving engine of Bach's music. Author Kennan clarifies it all for you.
