[From front jacket flap] How did Sir Winston Churchill reach the decisions that were to be binding upon the future of the free world? As a case history in statecraft, his attitude - and action - toward Ireland bridges the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Home ruler himself, yet the son of the Victorian Unionist, was Sir Winston consistent? As the wartime Prime Minister, he could have seized the Irish ports for use against the U-boats. His decision not to do so was only the last in a series of decisions he reached in the conflict between the two islands, once jointly called British. Churchill and Ireland examines and documents impartially his method of decision-making and shows, in microcosm, how his mind worked at the summit of world affairs. The author, Mary C. Bromage, graduate of Radcliffe and member of the University of Michigan faculty, is already known for her biography of de Valera and numerous studies of Anglo-Irish affairs published in the United States and England. Here, she has taken one strand in the pattern of Churchill's political career. By tracing it from his childhood all the way through, she discloses "the figure in the carpet." To accomplish this, the author brings to bear her perceptions acquired through periods of research spent on both sides of the Irish Sea.
