Quite heavy reading creasing to the spine with chipping at the top and bottom and a two inch dark patch at the bottom where tape has been fixed to reinforce it at some time. Three inch crease to the top corner of the rear cover with another one inch crease nearer the corner. Text block cracked at page 86 but the pages are secure enough. Previous owner's name in pencil to first page. Yellow spotting to the pages at the front and rear of the book. The previous owner has also ticked three titles in the list of previous books at the front. Browning to the pages. Cover illustration by Peter Archer and interior illustrations by Geoffrey Whittam. First printing of the Armada edition. Originally published by Collins in hard covers in 1951 and then as a Fontana paperback in 1955. The rear panel has a small closed tear to the top left corner and three smaller nicks towards the spine. Browning to the page edges with dark spotting to the top edges and a few scattered dark spots to the fore edges. Previous owner's name is written in pencil to the reverse of the front free endpaper. A few brown spots to the endpapers but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. The jacket has chipping at the top and bottom of the spine and to the corners. Quite a lot of tearing along the edge of the spine next to the rear panel with this close to being detached. Tape stuck to the reverse along the top and bottom edges with brown staining from this affecting the rear panel, particularly along the bottom. The rear panel also has some surface discolouration. Illustrated by Geoffrey Whittam. First printing.

First edition, first printing. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, in dustwrapper designed by Geoffrey Whittam, who also provides the illustrations within. Illustrated map endpapers. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean and without inscriptions or stamps. Lower edges untrimmed. The spine tips are a little softened and faded. There is a light dappled stain (c. 2.5 x 1cm) to the upper edge of the page block. In the dustwrapper, rubbed to edges, folds and extremities, most notably to spine tips where there is a little loss to the upper tip. There are a couple of closed tears to the lower edge of the lightly soiled rear panel, and another to the upper edge of the fold between spine and rear panels.
