Item Description: London: Chatto and Windus, 1932. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dark blue dust jacket, with an illustration of a globe and airplane to the front panel. Near fine, with minor wear to the spine ends, a hint of light toning to the spine, bright and fresh interior; unclipped dust-jacket, with minor wear and light creasing to the spine ends, tiny nicks to the corners, very faint toning to the spine, bright and clean panels. An exceptionally beautiful copy, rare in the original dust jacket, and rare in fine condition. One of the classic 20th century dystopian novels, Brave New World tells the story of Huxley's envisioned future for modern society: a totalitarian regime in which individuality has been replaced by conditioned uniformity and free thinking is suppressed with constant, mindless entertainment enhanced by government sanctioned recreational, mood-altering drugs. When this future "utopia" is breached by a "savage" who was raised without modern luxury, Huxley exposes that, while the future has secured the happiness and general well-being of all members of society, the meaning of life has been lost in the process. Unlike George Orwell's 1984 or Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano, Huxley does not envision a government that uses terror or force to maintain control over its citizens, nor one that inherently depresses its constituents for the sake of progress. Instead, the chilling moral of Brave New World is that, while "it is usual for human beings to suppose that, whatever the immediate outlook may be, ultimately all will be for the best in the best of all possible worlds," it is important to remember not to be "too optimistic" or forget to question one's surroundings and the motives of those in positions of power. Item Description: Chatto & Windus, London, United Kingdom, 1932. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Without Jacket as Issued. First Edition. Lemon-yellow buckram with blue leather spine label. Top edge of page block is gilt, other edges untrimmed. #19 of 324 signed copies in the limited edition. Spine is a bit darkened and label is a bit faded. Some foxing to the end papers and a bit of dust on the top. I bagged it up when I bought it about 20 years ago, so the last 20 years of dust are on the bag and not the book. Nice enough copy and nice low number!. Signed by Author. Limited Edition.
