Book First Edition
First illustrated edition (second overall) 8vo (222 x 142 mm), 16 pp. publisher's catalogue to rear dated 1895, the odd, random spot, browning to extreme edges, otherwise very good; publisher's gilt-decorated green cloth, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, offsetting and the a couple of spots to endpapers, dust-jacket with a few chips to extremities, spine-panel toned, front flap largely replaced but still a notably early example of the dust jacket. A first illustrated edition and still second only to the first edition, published in 1885 in the exceptionally rare, early state dust-jacket.
[a handsome copy] London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1885. Original blue cloth, beveled. First Edition, first printing (which consisted of 1000 copies). Stevenson began writing these verses as early as 1881: supposedly after perusing through Kate Greenaway's BIRTHDAY BOOK FOR CHILDREN, he observed "These are rather nice rhymes, and I don't think they will be difficult to do," and then proceeded to try his hand at them. It is hard to believe that the author of DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE and THE BODY-SNATCHER also wrote these sprightly juvenile rhymes, voiced as if by a child. The book is dedicated to Alison Cunningham, "Cummy," his childhood nurse-maid. The spine lettering of this copy is the less-encountered variant (no known precedence): the apostrophe is NOT shaped like the digit "7", and the word "OF" is in a smaller font than the word "A". The top edge of the pages is gilded, with the other edges uncut, which is the usual primary state. Inside, this copy does NOT have the ink-stamp "Printed in Great Britain" at the foot of the title verso; though not mentioned by bibliographers, copies with the ink-stamp were likely sent overseas (probably to a colony). This is a close-to-fine copy, with just a trace of rubbing at the very extremities of the volume but with scarcely any other wear or soil; the free endpapers are browned as usual, due to the binder's glue used on the inside covers. Beinecke 193; Princeton 20A copy 3; Prideaux pp 35-39.

Condition: Near fine. First issue. First edition, publisher's presentation copy, of this enduring collection of children's verse. The first major collection of poetry for children to capture the popular imagination, and still the most immune to the passage of time long after most Victorian sentimental verse has fallen away from the general memory. An uncanny spirit moves in and under Stevenson's gently rhythmic verses, most particularly in the nine poems of "A Child Alone": here, the child-subject and child-reader is captain of her ship and master of her lonely kingdom; his only companions his books, his doll, a "child of air," a "playmate that never was seen," or no-one at all but the moon. The first issue contained only 1000 copies (ref. Prideaux). A beautiful copy, with a contemporary inscription by Sarah Anne Byles to politician [T].D. Sullivan, M.P. on St. Patrick's Day, 1888; Lady Byles was an active supporter of Home Rule (unlike Stevenson himself) and later president of the Women's National Liberal Association. 6.5'' x 4.5''. Original bevelled blue cloth with gilt publisher's device to front cover. Gilt-lettered spine, with "of" in smaller type and normal apostrophe. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. "Two Series" not present in list "by the same author" (ref. Beinecke). [2], x, 101 pages. Gift inscription from Lady Byles on half-title. Publisher's presentation blind stamp to title page. Toning to endpapers. Minor edgewear and light scuffing to boards, spine faintly sunned; gilt lettering still bright.
