Book First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Reprint; First Printing. Light reading creases and shelf wear, light foxing to endpapers and edges of reading block. ; First printing of Windmill paperback edition with full number line, 2015. Nice tight copy, no names inside. Cover design by Glenn O'Neill with lettering by Stephen Raw. Heavy book and priced accordingly. ; 384 pages; Sergeant Lester Ferris is a man in need of a rest. He s spent a lot of his life being shot at. He has no family, he s nearly forty, burned out and about to be retired. The island of Mancreu is the perfect place for Lester to serve out his time - and the perfect place for shady business, too, hence the Black Fleet of illicit ships lurking in the bay: listening stations, money laundering operations, drug factories and deniable torture centres. None of which should be a problem, because Lester s brief is to turn a blind eye. But Lester has made a friend: a brilliant, internet-addled street kid with a comic-book fixation who might, Lester hopes, become an adopted son. As Mancreu s small society tumbles into violence, the boy needs Lester to be more than just an observer. He needs him to be a hero. Mass Market PB; 129 X 23 X 198 millimeters.

Condition: new. (Paperback, 2018). (2018) 2018 Windmill Books paperback edition. 8vo (128 x 197mm). Ppxiv,297. Colour and b/w photograph plates, bibliography. Fine new unread paperback. In 2009 Edwin Rist was a music student and exceedingly enthusiastic fly-tyer. His enthusiasm for his calling extended to walking out of the Tring Museum with 299 exotic bird skins in a suitcase. Rist had talked his way into the confidence of the staff and spent several months familiarising himself with the layout and organisation of the museum in order to commit his crime. The bird skins came to the museum orginally as a result of decades of effort by Victorian natural history collectors, including even Alfred Russell Wallace, and the species stolen included a number which are now endangered or extinct. Most of the skins were eventually recovered by the police after Rist had offered many of the individual feathers for sale to fly-tyers on the internet. Kirk W. Johnson "was waist-deep in a river in New Mexico when his fly-fishing guide first told him about the heist. When he discovered that the thief evaded prison, and that many of the birds were never recovered, Johnson embarked upon an international investigation which led him deep into the fiercely secretive underground community obsessed with the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying." Besides very thoroughly unravelling the whole story of Rist's nefarious activities, Johnson also recovered many of the unaccounted for skins and interviewed many of the more and less peripheral characters in the story. A ripping yarn with scientific footnotes - a great read with much of interest to the fly tyer. .

On 16 August 1819, a strong force of yeomanry and regular cavalry charged into a crowd of more than 100,000 workers who had gathered on St Peter's Field in Manchester for a meeting about Parliamentary reform. Many were killed. This violent, startling event became known as Peterloo, one of the darkest days in Britain's social history. The Peterloo Massacre provides a revealing narrative account of the events leading up to Peterloo, starkly describes the actions of that fateful day, and examines its aftermath. It offers a new perspective on the political and military activities of the time, and shows how the very nature of society was powerfully influenced by irreversible technological change: a pattern that, two-hundred years later, still has relevance in understanding the forces shaping our world today.
