From the blurb: "Here is the changing image of English childhood throughout many centuries of our history clearly outlined by Mrs. Sylvia Lynd and full of lively and sympathetic detail. Skilfully, she tells the story of English children at home, at school, at work, at play in all the rnultitudinous activities of the impatient, energetic years of youth. There is light and shade in her scenes, however, for by no means invariably has the lot of children in England been a happy one." From the "Britain in Pictures" series. Book
Cloth, 4to, 28 cm, 160 pp, plates, ills (many colour). From the blurb: - ".the city's collection of French paintings, housed in the main art gallery at Kelvingrove, is undoubtedly of international significance. The collection is particularly strong in paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries from the Realist, Barbizon, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist schools, but includes, too, a superb 15th-century work by the Master of Moulins, and fine 17th-century works by Vouet and Dughet. Every one of the French oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and pastels in Glasgow's collection at Kelvingrove is illustrated in this book. One hundred and twenty-two of the pictures are shown in black and white and include works by Daumier, Lhermitte, Simon and Monticelli, while 88 are in colour, including one of the city's two van Goghs, a superb portrait of Alexander Reid, one of the dealers who helped shape Glasgow's taste for French works. Among the many artists whose work is in the collection and also depicted in colour are Millet, Corot, Fantin-Latour, Seurat, Matisse, Derain, Monet, Gauguin, and Picasso. Each picture is accompanied by the artist's name and dates, the title of the painting and its date, if known, its size, and its provenance. There is also a subject index, and, for those with a more scholarly interest, a numerical index which relates each painting's current attribution to that in the three previous catalogues of French pictures." Fine in Very Good dustwrapper.
