Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Uncorrected Proof. This is the UNCORRECTED PROOF, an early, collectible state of the book. It is in FINE condition in pictorial wrappers, as issued. A rare UNCORRECTED PROOF in collector's condition. First edition. You might call Will Buchanan a Renaissance man-high school science teacher, avid hiker, sensitive lover, and six feet of rugged good looks, wit, intellect, and forest savvy. His beat is New Hampshire's fabulous White Mountains with their rushing waters, sun-dappled woods, and still, moonlit nights. This dramatic terrain is where Tom Eslick sets Deadly Kin, a mystery filled with breathless scenic beauty and taut suspense. When Will's former girlfriend Laurie, sheriff of Saxton Mills, asks him to escort her seventeen-year-old niece Erin to an overnight hut at Zealand Falls, Will promptly agrees-for, try as he may, he cannot forget Laurie. There the lovely young Erin is to meet up with her brother, Josh, who is hiking the Appalachian Trail. Erin's hostility disturbs Will-but even more disturbing is the passionate embrace between her and her brother. And when Josh mysteriously falls to his death that night, Will, Laurie, and Erin are thrown into a tangled web of family relations and relentless mayhem that makes them, in heart-stopping mountain chase scenes, the quarry of an unlikely-yet familiar-killer.

Daniel Quinn, America's foremost Civil War reporter, recalls his adolescent years in and around Albany, New York, and his 15-year pursuit of the mysterious Maud Fallon, a theater star world-renowned for her nude interpretations of Byron and Keats. Quinn has a newsman's eye for detail, and history buffs will enjoy his accounts of the anti-draft riots, the underground railroad, and Saratoga racing in its heyday. However, as in the rest of the "Albany cycle," real people and events take on an almost mythological significance. Set a century earlier than his other novels, and written in a bombastic prose style reminiscent of 19th-century journalese, this novel will surprise fans of the Depression-era Kennedy. This is an important work of fiction. Kennedy has won the Pulitzer Prize and The National Book Critics Award.

This brief epistolary novel is a dazzling melange of letters written by at least 10 different characters, including the eponymous H, a stuffed toy belonging to Benjamin, 12, a borderline autistic child sent to summer camp to learn social skills. To the adult world, Benjamin is excessively withdrawn. In fact, he lives in a world in which the stuffed H is named Elliot and is one of many Elliots, aliens who reside in "Elliottown." Besides revealing the bizarre complexity of the boy's imagination, the letters contrast sharply with the well-meaning but uncompromising missives from the adults in the his life. Shepard uses each letter to reveal not only information, but also the character of the writer; even the absence of communications is often revealing. The cumulative effect is to explain subtly Benjamin's condition. A most impressive debut.

Garrison Keillor is the consummate storyteller, gifted with the rare ability - both in print and in performance - to hold an audience spellbound with his tales of ordinary people whose lives contain extraordinary moments of humor, tenderness, and grace. This recording of Keillor reading his own novel, Lake Wobegon Days, is a carefully edited abridgement of the book and includes a few segments taken from live performances recorded during a fundraising tour for public radio stations in 1985.

An increasingly rare book in collector's condition. Original price intact on dust jacket, as necessary for a collectible book. In sixteen stories, T. Coraghessan Boyle tears through the walls of contemporary society to reveal a world at once comic and tragic, droll and horrific. Boyle introduces us to a death-defying stuntman who rides across the country strapped to the axle of a Peterbilt, and to a retired primatologist who can't adjust to the "civilized" world. He chronicles the state of romance that requires full-body protection in a disease-conscious age and depicts with aching tenderness the relationship between a young boy and his alcoholic father. These magical and provocative stories mark yet another virtuoso performance from one of America's most supple and electric literary inventors. Named by The New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice as one of the 13 best books of 1989, they said of the book: "All the linguistic acrobatics and hip, erudite audacity one expects from this author".

The protagonist of King's "top-notch" novel is literary novelist Thad Beaumont, whose greatest success has come with three gory thrillers written under the pseudonym George Stark. Beaumont is threatened by a blackmailer who may reveal Stark's identity; Beaumont kills off Stark instead; and Stark goes on a murderous rampage. "Wondrously frightening . . . among the best of his voluminous work," maintained Publishers Weekly.

hardcover, 6¼" x 9½", with dust jacket 314 pages This biography looks beyond the Hollywood-manufactured cliché to the volatile polarities, conflicted sexualities, and childhood trauma of the person himself. Was he bisexual, or gay? A neurotic con artist, or a lost boy trying to find himself? This revisionist, passionate portrait, based on many new and documented sources and featuring never-before-published photographs, argues that Dean's angst-ridden compliance - in public - with rigid sexual mores helped fuel the fury and electricity of his acting. It is admirably tight and clean with vivid dust jacket colors. McMillan's breakthrough novel. An American novelist whose works have been among the first to explore the loves and emotions of African American women through a style which might be described as popular fiction rather than literary, Terry McMillan saw her 1992 best-seller "Waiting to Exhale", about four women in Phoenix, Arizona, sell more than three million copies worldwide. It was also the basis for a hit movie, for which she co-wrote the screenplay. Waiting to Exhale is a proud, poignant tale, about four thirty-something African-American women who rely on one another for love and support. McMillan's portrait of these friends, who struggle with differing aspects of loneliness, is indelibly etched with love and understanding. Her empathy is vividly realized in the work. McMillan's passion is infectious.
