It was not until the early 2000s that Germany and Austria could bring themselves to rehabilitate these disobedient soldiers and to recognize them as victims of Nazism. For the first time, this present issue provides both an overview of the desertation proceedings and the prosecution practices by the military judiciary. Furthermore, it presents the structures which enabled the successful escapes in the military district XVIII by focusing on today's Austrian federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg as well as the Italian autonomous province of Bolzano - South Tyrol. Due to both their proximity to neutral and security promising Switzerland and the remoteness of the Alpine zones, these regions played an important role. Recent case studies also offer insights into this manifold and complex phenomenon.

This monograph shows the review of definitions of singlehood, the rates of single individuals in each of the 33 European countries and across nine ESS rounds, and the socio-demographic profile of singles. It also presents the results of the analyses concerning the subjective well-being and general health of single people, basic human values, and religion.

This volume attempts a reconstruction and analysis of the ways in which Germany and Australia remember the First World War. It examines the various perspectives on the war with a focus on the roles that different media have played and continue to play in the formation of cultures of remembrance.

Countering the shattering of previous understandings of the world and its norms became an existential challenge as well as a necessary need. An important strategy was the use of humor and irony; also for the people of the Litzmannstadt ghetto. From a text-hermeneutic, cultural-linguistic and linguistic-philosophical perspective, taking into account the ghetto as a discourse space and its use of text types, ways of using irony will be analyzed and put into perspective in order to contribute to the linguistic reappraisal of the communication of Jewish actors during the Shoa.
