Hardcover first edition - First printing. "A memoir of war and peace, passion and politics" - "Hazleton first went to Jerusalem at the age of 20, remained 13 years, then moved to New York City. Five years later, in 1984, she returned for what she intended would be a final breaking away, only to find herself drawn yet again to the much-changed city. Recalling the innocence of the past - her own and the city's - she writes vividly of the passions and wars that have wracked Jerusalem and all of Israel (the "'blood and racism and hatred'); the religious-secular clash for 'the soul of the city'; and the friendships and excitement that continue to attract her to this 'city of paradox'." (Publishers Weekly) 243 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket.

349 Seiten in englischer Sprache (durch Inhaltsverzeichnis erschlossen - siehe Abbildung 2), zahlreiche (teils farbige) Abbildungen, Original-Leineneinband, farbig illustrierter Original-Schutzumschlag ca. 24 × 32 cm, tadelloses Exemplar Text der vorderen Umschlagklappe: This volume presents to the world for the first time the private sketchbooks of Pablo Picasso. Picasso began these sketchbooks in Barcelona in 1894, at the age of thirteen. For more than seventy years, as the young painter blossomed and matured into the greatest artist of the twentieth century, he kept a record of his ideas and thoughts so that by 1964 there were 175 sketchbooks, a unique and startling picture of the mmd of a genius at work. Until now these sketchbooks have been privately held by Picasso's family and scattered around the world. Fh have been unstudied and unseen by the public. This book and its accompanying exhibition at the Pace Gallery in New York in the spring of 1986 bring together the entire complement of drawings many of them the basis for Picassos famous paintings. Through the sketchbooks we sec masterpieces take shape. Here in a precise progression of images one can trace the development of such works as the Family of Saltimbanques, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and The Rape of the Sabines. The jacket of this book is by the artist himseif. We have taken it from a sketchbook dated 1906 where he scribbled "Je suis Je cahier appartenant ä Monsieur Picasso peintre" (1 am the notebook belonging to Mr. Picasso, painter). The notebooks of M. Picasso are a revelation of the masfrr's most intimate and personal vision. rlhey have excited the imagination and the critical talents of six of the greatest American art historians: E. A. Carmean, Sam Hunter, Rosalind Krauss, Theodore Reff, Robert Rosenblum, and Gert Schiff. Each has written an essay on a single outstanding sketchbook relating to his particular field of expertise. A foreword by Claude Picasso, the artist's son, and a reminiscence by Franoise Gibt, Claude's mother, provide a more personal understancling of the part the sketchbooks played in Picassos life. In this book's first section, the six sketchbooks that relate to the essays are reproduced in hill and in sequence, exactly as Picasso created them. 'Ehe images in the second section have been taken from thirty of the finest sketchbooks. The final section is a catalogue raisonn, which fully describes all 175 extant sketchbooks and features one image from each. Sprache: eng.

Rare proof copy of the first edition, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Provincetown, January 1991. Good wishes to Richard and Rebecca, Mary Oliver". This, the Pulitzer-prize winning poet's darkest and perhaps best collection, includes the first appearance of her most-loved poem, "Wild Geese". This title was inscribed in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where Oliver spent most of her writing career, and was "regarded as a cross between a celebrity recluse and a village oracle. 'I very much wished not to be noticed, and to be left alone, and I sort of succeeded', she has said. She tells of being greeted regularly at the hardware store by the local plumber; he would ask how her work was going, and she his: 'There was no sense of éliteness or difference'. On the morning the Pulitzer was announced, she was scouring the town dump for shingles to use on her house. A friend who had heard the news noticed her there and joked, 'Looking for your old manuscripts?'" (Franklin). Ruth Franklin, "What Mary Oliver's Critics Don't Understand", New Yorker, 20 November 2017. Octavo. Original green wrappers lettered in black. Spine lightly sunned, foot just bumped with short closed tear to front joint, head of spine slightly rubbed, faint marks to front wrapper. A near-fine copy.
