cloth, dust jacket. 4to. cloth, dust jacket. 142 pages. This is the second edition of a good introductory, practical, and comprehensive book for beginners who want to learn about the history of type, typefounding and typefaces. A good copy in good dust jacket. Twenty-five chapters cover subjects such as how and why typefaces are different, fifteen great inventions behind typefaces, classifying type, choosing type, and the practical problems of identifying type plus what to do when you have become familiar with type. This work is a great place to begin when one wants to start studying the printed word and working with printing and type. Lieberman also includes informative and interesting historical information covering the more specific aspects of the printed word in "The 15 Great Inventions Behind Our Typefaces," which describe the inventions of the book, small letters, silent reading, printing, typefaces, roman type, true type design, numbers, mechanized type production, the type family, evocative printing, the Typorama, cold type, and the possible reinvention of the alphabet. Paperback. Goudy, Frederic W. (illustrator). small 8vo. Paperback. 285+(1) pages. This book is not only Goudy's autobiography, but it is the most complete record to date of his typographic contribution, which has had a major worldwide effect. First published in 1946 as one of the Typophile Chapbooks XIII and XIV, entitled A HALF-CENTURY OF TYPE DESIGN AND TYPOGRAPHY, this second edition is available as the student and professional typographer's working tool, as well as a work of insight into Goudy's designs. Goudy begins his work with how he entered the world of type design, chronicling his introduction to lettering as a boy, and then moving on to his early years. He then follows by describing each of his typefaces, over 100 of them are included, along with a story behind their design. Many of the stories are accompanied by type specimens, mostly in full or in part. Slight changes from the Typophiles edition are listed in a separate section. An index of the types and a bibliography of Goudy's writings are also included.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Displays examples of twentieth-century American typefaces; in all generally in the 24-point size. Green cloth, printed labels on spine and upper board. A fine copy. The first regular edition of this book, by then displaying some 1,600 typefaces, was published by Oak Knoll in 1993. The "preliminary edition" (which can pass as a first edition) had been circulated amongst typographic experts and others to see what knowledge could be provided of missing type specimens. There is no statement of limitation, but the book is rare.
