The origins of this book go back to the author's arrival in the city in 1962 to become first Director of the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies at York University, and his increasing personal and professional involvement with the city and its people. In it he illustrates the relationship between history~social, political and economic~and topography in the evolution of the 'townscape' of York over the centuries from the establishment of a Roman legionary fortress in A.D. 71 to the present day. Each of the seven chapters deals with the effects of a particular period of history, using as point of departure a particular building or feature ~'Motte and Minster', 'The King's' Manor', 'Railway Street', to take typical examples. Dr Nuttgens' command of facts and statistics is impressive; but the value of his study and the enjoyment it offers the reader stem from his ultimate reliance on the evidence of his own eyes and feelings. His book is essential reading for all who care about what is worth preserving of our man~made environment. The text is complemented by superb photographs by Keith Gibson, line drawings by the author and six maps.
